You dont want the 50mm prime lens I have one and I think the 35mm would be easier to use

Really? The Olympus 50mm? I figured it would be easier to work with since it's supposed to be the best macro lens available for the E Series.

I wonder if i should even grab the 35mm then.

I suck with decisions

Ughhh, i need to see if i can even return this EX-25. It seems to do the trick nicely. Scott, since you have the 50mm and you owned this camera b4 i did, do you think it's a good decision to try to return the EX-25 and spend a little extra to get the 35mm?

And how close do you have to be to focus with the 50, just outta curiosity?

I know with the macro extender, i can use it a few feet away when the 40-150mm's connected, but with the 14-45mm connected i need to be almost touching my target

I have the 50mm Prime lens for my Nikon D5200 that I have now. I did not have it for the Olympus.

With the 50MM you have to be too far away from things to get them to all fit in. this is why i want the 35mm. I use the 18 to 55mm most of all.. because I can zoom out.

Set one of your lens to 50mm and look through it and you will see what I am talking about. if I want to take a picture of something seems I have to move back to far to get it all in. I might be wrong and when I get the 35 I will not use it and will use the 50 but I have to be too far back with the 50 to even take a picture of a motherboard.

Yeah, i like having the 14-45mm for zooming in and out as needed. That's the main reason i bought the extender instead of the 35mm. I didn't realize how restricted it was. It seems like it can take nice macro shots now, but the position and zoom has to be very specific.

Damn, it sounds like the 50mm has some insane zoom on it. Do you not have a tripod with extendable legs? Or is that still not good enough?

yes I do have a tripod and still hard to get the pictures I want. I love the nifty fifty but have not found much use for it on the build and I also need to play with the macro settings on my camera as I think this might help more than another prime lens!! LOL better than another 250 dollars anyway!!

I would say stick with the tube until you decide more of what you like to shoot. You have a 40 to 150 zoom? That covers both 35mm (almost) and 50mm so I'd stick with the zoom for now since not too much of what we shoot for OC requires extreme macro... tubes will do as well for you in this regard. Maybe you want a cheap tube set with 3 sizes if it fits, instead? Each size will focus at a different point and give you different effective macro magnification.

I agree with seross--- being that is a crop sensor (I assume) that 50mm is really more like what? 85mm effective focal length (going by a regular full frame 35 sensor) -- that is pretty much too long for indoor stuff.

edit: if you want a cheap tripod like thing to try out, get a gorillapod;

http://joby.com/gorillapod

They're even more useful in some spots than a tripod; you can wrap the legs around a pole or anything and it just holds.

I have a tripod. It's a cheap one made mostly out of plastic but it does the trick. I've already lost a few of the thumbscrew knobs on it due to the stupid manufacturing decision of metal screws into plastic threads!!!! But i have it rigged with Irwin Quick Grip Clamps.

I have 2 lenses that i got in a kit with the camera. A 14-45mm lens which i use for just about everything. And a 40-150mm that's pretty much useless indoors (until last night with the macro tube). I really don't understand much about 35mm:50mm, what they mean, or why they're better for macro. I just know that the only lens i have that's useful for photographing my build is the 14-45, and it doesn't focus in closeups. For instance, when i posted shots of my Aquaero, i tried for like 2 hours to get a detailed shot of the PCB to no avail. The 50mm f2 lens is supposed to be the absolute best macro lens for my camera (~$500). The 35mm is called the 50mm's "Little Brother" and it has excellent reviews ($229 BNIB).

I just wanted to be able to take detailed closeups with my camera, so i was either gonna get the EX-25 macro extender or the 35mm lens. I chose the EX-25 because it's cheaper.

It's a micro four thirds mount camera. And it has a CCD (?) sensor. The only reason i know that is from the other day when i was googling how to get the 2 specs of dust off the sensor (which i still haven't been able to).

There's no chance of me buying the $500 50mm lens. I ONLY bought this camera for this specific build log. I've already spent more than i wanted to on photography (Camera, EX-25, Lighting, Backdrops).

THIS is the 35mm lens review from slrgear.com if you're curious. These are the sample shots from the review

f3.5

f8

My camera's the Evolt E-500, they used the E-510 so it should be the same with my camera

"We shoot both images using the default JPEG settings and manual white balance of our test bodies, so the images should be quite consistent from lens to lens."

So basically if i returned the EX-25 and bought the 35mm, i'd have the 14-45mm for all my standard shots, the 40-150mm for long range, and the 35mm for macro/closeup shots

Ah I see -- the problem with the 14-45 for macro must be that it has a poor close-focus distance to start with. If that is the case, a tube won't be able to do much for it being that it is such a wide angle.

You might want to think about the 35mm then... 35mm on your crop sensor is about the equivalent of 50mm on a "classic" film camera... or a "normal" lens. It pretty much approximates the human eye's field of view and depth compression. If neither of your lenses will work well enough for tubes, you might think about the macro lens.

I personally don't have much use for a specific macro lens but I have a few prime lenses that focus close enough that they work well with tubes:

Cool. Thanx for the links.

And yeah, i'm feeling like i made kind of a backwards purchase with the macro tube. I think i shoulda bought the 35mm, then if i needed more macro (which i wouldn't) i coulda bought the tube.

I'm definitely not on the hunt for the best lenses. I just want one good setup. I feel like the 35mm, especially if i can find a deal on it, might be the better purchase. I wonder if i can get a refund for this macro tube now

The 35mm is supposed to be 70mm compared to film camera. And it has a 1:1 focus within 6in i think....

The EX-25 seems to be working ok enough on either of the lenses zoomed in all the way. I was just expecting it to be more versatile. That's what i'm hoping for out of the 35mm.
