Lol, i'm playin. It has to do with Newsgroups

AOL was pretty much my ISP. I really didn't know anybody besides myself that was really interested in computers when i was a kid. I was just curious so figured stuff out eventually. I do remember bulletin boards though :o

Actually your levels on these look great on my color balanced SRGB screen. On #3 you caught a glare and #4 is a bit contrasty but that is about all I can criticize with the processing.

edit: now that I look more closely there is something odd about the way you go from #5 to #6. They are basically the same angle and lighting but the color balance shifts a bit. So either the light has cycles where it shifts rapidly or you didn't sync the settings fully from one to the other.

Yeah, I think the problem is with me tryin to wash out the background as much as possible. I synced em all up at the beginning, but i ended up having to change a few of em cuz of red tints. Hiking up the White/Light/Highlights and trying to make the rig not look messed up is difficult for me. Same for the reverse with the black backdrop. I'm just thinking maybe practice will make me better.

I also kept the aperture wider on these than i normally do. Dunno if that's good or bad. I'm really just experimenting with it.

I spend like 20 minutes per shot usually editing, then i get fed up and can't see it clearly anymore :p

#5 => #6 was just zoomed in farther so i had less backdrop to wash out. Not sure if i changed anything on the aperture after zooming

Edit: I think i desperately need to get a lens hood too. I catch alot of glares. I didn't post a few cuz of glares. Any recommendation whether i should get a Collapsible Rubber Bayonet Hood or a Tulip Hood?

SerScott, i was just joking around about the fightclub thing. I wasn't trying to break up the convo :o

I think the wider aperture has improved the photos. Look at #2 and the last one -- the framing you did with the case slightly out of focus gives it some interest and depth. Sure it might have been on accident now but you can see that it looks good and replicate it in the future.

When I said "glare" on #3 I was confusing -- I meant the case was angled so it reflected the light oddly and it looks bluish. You're thinking of flare which is when the light hits the lens in a bad way and washes things out. While a lens hood CAN help here, you'd be better served with barndoors or gobos or something that stops the light at its source. So when you put up a light that is going to flare in to the lens, you also add something on the light that blocks it from aiming in that direction rather than counting on the lens hood to catch it.

I was pretty sure that compact fluorescents don't emit a full spectrum and I think I'm right:
Quote:
It's close to impossible to use CFL if you want correct color rendition. There's no work around that. It's not the question of white balance, but of Color-Rendering Index (CRI) and color spectrum. Most CFL specify color temperature, so it's no brainer to set, however, their emission spectrum is not uniform, even lamps with CRI of 95 have severe dips in some parts of the spectrum. Since not all wavelengths are emitted, you loosing some color information -- something you cannot restore in Photoshop. There are people shooting with high-CRI studio CFLs, but you always can tell their pictures by strange greenish cast to them or somewhat unnatural skin color.

From: http://www.flickr.com/groups/techtalk/discuss/72157594174875013/

Which means there are dips in the "white" spectrum of these bulbs. They will never give a truly perfect color rendition because they don't emit a full spectrum of light... and you might be pulling your hair out over it.
