Stabilizing i7 930 @ 4.2GHz, any tips?

Hi!

I decided to take on a challenge of getting this beast to 4.20GHz for 24/7 use. 4GHz was really easy, I got it at about 1.25v load and temps in the 60's. It seems though that beyond 4GHz, it gets a lot harder!
Anyhow, I've been reading up quite a bit on guides and threads here on OCN and they've been very helpful. Using these guides, I feel now though that I've reached a wall and I'm in dire need of some tips. redface.gif

DRAM timings are 8-8-8-24 1N

Currently, the system will BSOD after about 20 min of Prime95 blend using 90% of available RAM.
Core temps are currently reaching ~74c during load, so I'm a little bit vary of further increasing vcore.
Is there anything else I should try tweaking to try get this overclock stable?

Below are the 4.2GHz settings that I had for a 950. Note that you would need to change the ram information to suit your ram.

Here is a link to a tool that will let you check different CPU multi and BCLK values and give you the other settings. When in BIOS just pick what is closest.

Here is some good info on a 920 going all the way to 4.5Ghz

screen shots of bios included.. but for an EVGA 760 A1.. but some things are similar that might help

use manual voltage 1.3+,disable speedstep & up pll voltage & ioh/ich voltage?

CPU to 1.3+
PLL to 1.88
IOH to 1.16
ICH to 1.16

I don't have the same board as you but that's how I get 4.2ghz?

Thanks for the replies!

It seems that most people are overclocking using manual voltage instead of offset and also disabling Speedstep, any specific reason for doing this? Currently I really like the idea of downing frequency and voltage during idle, but if it compromises stability I just might have to disable them.

On another note, I've been further tweaking my settings, bringing vcore up to +0.32500v, which is during load ~1.368v. Temps are still under 80c so it seems OK. Prime95 blend has passed two hours thus far, gonna keep it running over the night.
If the system is still unstable, I'll try upping the PLL + IOH and ICH voltages. Earlier I tried improving stability with IOH and ICH voltages, but they didn't seem to affect it in any way, these were very short tests though.
I haven't tried tweaking PLL yet, but curiously I see many running it lower than 1.80 on other mobos, claiming it improves stability. It's too bad you can't do that on this ASUS board.

You'll probably need to up your QPI volts. Don't go higher than about 1.4 or so.

Disabling speedstep & powersaving etc just increases voltage stability on most boards,some have trouble maintaining steady stable volts, another thing I forgot to say is you might need to up your QPI too!

I use offset & speedstep @ 4.0ghz but if I want go higher I have to up all the things I mentioned & use manual volts?

just keep messing you will find it eventually, sounds like your working it out already.

I'm happy to report that it passed 12hrs of Prime95 blend. I've also been able to play a couple of rounds of BF3, so it's probably quite safe to say the OC is stable. smile.gif
