I've recently finihsed building my rig and I am having problems getting the proper settings when it comes to games. When I look around the web it seems that most folks are way past me and are only asking what the settings should be to capture video of their in-game action. I have tried to ask those people what their settings were at to no avail

Here is the dilemma: I got 3 free games with my AMD MSI R7950. One works fine, the other (Far Cry 3 had a bad activation key, and the third one, that I am trying to play, seems to be buggy as hell)

So, I am wondering on MSI Afterburner what the proper settings would be when I get game stutters. Do I crank the Core clock up? Crank it down?, etc.

The game in question is Sleeping Dogs and people have the game running smoothly on less powerful processors and GPUs than mine. It seems that I have to keep the in-game graphics settings as low as possible or it wont play. As a matter of fact as soon as I try to change certain settings it will either freeze or drag and stutter, making it nearly impossible to even change it back. Most of the time it crashes the system.

1) Im using Vista as an OS. Is this part of the problem?

2) When I benchmarked the graphics I was only averaging 32 fps. Isnt that incredibly poor performance for a 7950?

3) Would getting a second 7950 correct any future problems? (I would like to ensure smooth gameplay and have no problem getting a second one if that will correct my problems)

Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated

No performance increase will fix a buggy game.

Is the game buggy or is your fps low?

Well, Ive heard that with the right settings people can get the game to run smooth. So that is what I am looking to do. At the low/medium settings I am only getting average 26 fps. I thought it was in the 30's but just ran it again and the numbers in the 30's were the high end, not the average.

Do you have vsync on in these games?

If yes turn it off.

Also check your gpu usage while gaming.

I did have vsync on and I did turn it off. If there was any effect it was missed due to wicked stuttering and freezing even with that off.

My gpu usage wasn't crazy while running the game. At least it didnt seem like it was too high. I havent checked it while the game was running in a while because I set the graphics to the lowest quality and the game is playable. And because of that I am always reluctant to open any other program for fear of it freezing the game.

Your card is supposed to actually run it at ultra without any problems.. I have the gigabyte windforce 3x, but the difference shouldn't be too dramatic.. not sure what the problem may be here..

I must admit i'm not really informed when it comes to amd cpus.

I'm on the latest non beta drivers, maybe you want to try to uninstall your drivers following this guide
http://www.overclock.net/t/988215/how-to-properly-uninstall-ati-amd-software-drivers-for-graphics-cards/190

and then reinstalling latest AMD driver? http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

edit: i had an unknown problem where i'd get random stutters in game, i didn't know how to solve it. I decided to format and everything's been working perfectly ever since.
