It is easily dismissed because quite often advanced topics are not well represented. I make it a point to find to examples every year to show students things that are incorrect on wikipedia, it doesn't take much searching on some topics. Broad general topics are well covered and rarely have issues because a large part of the user base can comment on them unlike advanced topics.

Don't get me wrong it is a great starting point but unlike a journal it has zero checks to it before being published. Good reputable peer-reviewed journals are less likely to have false information published. Wikipedia is peer-reviewed after changes and may or may not be checked often. It is great for general usage but there is no accountability with it for anything past that.

You have to use common sense.. Most importantly, a well written wiki has references at the bottom..

Don't use Wikipedia as your SOURCE for information, use it as a summary and use its REFERENCES as your source.

BOOM! Wikipedia did all the researching for you!

Exactly this. It's especially good for finding cited authors/researchers of a given topic, then you can go look up their body of (published) work. I didn't want to give the impression that I thought Wikipedia was "bad", it's just better as a starting point than as an authoritative source.

Exactly.
That's the way you should use Wikipedia, and any article or book too tbh.

All pieces of literature have a slight subjective tint. It is impossible to be otherwise. That has nothing to do with relativism ofc.
Being slightly biased towards a point of view, doesn't give merit to opposing points of view.

That said, paying people to write about you in wikipedia is...sad...stick to review sites, forums and yelp rolleyes.gif

Spot on. That is exactly how it should be used, and frankly there isn't anything better for it. Reduces a couple hours of library research down to 20 mins. You would be surprised at what some students turn in from Wikipedia though. I get papers from students in 4000 level college courses that are plainly wikipedia research only. It is easy enough to tell when the only sources cited are the ones at the bottom of the wiki article. At the very least follow the sources from wikipedia on to their sources.

From time to time they do give me a good laugh though. I also freely admit it is a soap box item of mine though.
