Strange issue with Perl on Debian

Thread Starter
Hello peeps

I have fixed the issue already - but I was wondering if anyone has seen this before...

I rebooted one of my Debian servers and a whole host of stuff just stopped working. Many of them used Perl for one thing or another, and was throwing errors like "XXX.pm" did not return a true value. I thought, this is really weird because they are all standard Perl modules (POSIX.pm, Socket.pm were some examples). How could the standard Perl modules be missing 1; at the end?!

Well...

Turns out they were missing more than just the 1; - I headed over to /usr/lib/perl/blah blah and *ALL* the modules were zero bytes in size. Completely empty.

Simply running apt-get install --reinstall for Perl and related packages fixed the issue but does anyone know what might have caused it? There's about 80% free on the disk so I don't think space was an issue...

The server was running for about 70 days before I rebooted it. My first reaction was to restore the virtual machine from the previous night backup - which I did, but had the same problem so the corruption had occurred during the machine running.

How bazaar!
Ol' Sandy

I use Perl extensively at work and have never experienced anything like this. Very weird.

What do you use that box for and it accessible from the WAN? (just trying to rule out the possibility of malice)

I've never seen it either.
It's a web server, and it is accessible from the WAN - but only for the web, SSH isn't exposed (the most obvious target).

Unless there's something stupidly wrong with the config, I don't think it was malicious, but then I don't have the evidence to prove it wasn't either....

Filesystem or hard drive corruption by any chance? My external HDD (was formatted as ext2), experienced suddenly a similar behavior: files in some folders had gone to zero length, and the only explanation I could come up with was that the filesystem had somehow corrupted itself. rolleyes.gif

It's running on Hyper-V and all the physical volumes check out OK, I guess it could be logical file system corruption - but why all the Perl modules...
Maybe might run e2fsck anyway...

HTTP is still a big vector for attack, but it's a lot more difficult finding the breach in those instances.

Building Perl web-servers is actually one of my main duties at work smile.gif

smile.gif No probs.

I'm about to run up a new Debian VM for C-ICAP on the same Hyper-V volume so we'll see what happens with that one.
