Cooling issues?

Thread Starter
Hey people of the Overclock.net community,

For the server in my sig i'd like to upgrade the CPU to the 3570k, but that CPU has a TDP of 77W and my case allows 65W max. Will this cause issues when i choose to do the upgrade?
Thanks in advance!

Your question doesn't make sense to me. Last I checked cases were not rated for wattage?

If it's the Cooler Master Elite 100 , doesn't it come with a 150W PSU?

some HTPC or passive cases are rated for TDP because the lack of cooling / airflow.

as far as running a 77w chip. it depends on what you are going to be doing with the server. if you are going to be folding or something heavy, i wouldn't recommend it. but if it's just a file server or something that is idle most of the time, then sure why not. you can also mod the case to allow better airflow and that might help with the 77w chip.

+1 to what psyclum says. I have an HTPC with an i3-3225 in a Lian Li PC-Q27 case that's passively cooled. It's a mini-ITX build and it works because the CPU never really goes above 9W or so during operation. CPU temperature is about 31C using the Intel stock cooler and warm air is vented out of the PSU.
