How bad would the 4gb ram in new rMBP be?

I was gonna pull the trigger on the Macbook Air with upgraded 8GB ram today, but I saw that the retina mbp price got cut, making it only 100$ more than what I would have paid for the Air. Now I think the display far outweighs the extra 4gb ram, but just how bad is only 4gb here?
I saw that with memory compressions in mavericks, 4gb is the new 6gb, so will that work out well?
I don't want to do a bunch of editing on it, just browsing, videos (1080p high bitrate, 3k,4k in a few years maybe), and some dota 2. Also word processing.

I don't think its going to be that big of a deal for normal applications, web browsing, and a bit of editing in a pinch - the upgraded display will be a nice addition, and the CPU is a decent amount faster. On my MBP, I just checked, I have a few downloads going, iTunes, a bunch of tabs and a few other things and i'm hitting ~ 3GB application memory.

Of course that being said, if you can manage it, the extra $100 for 8GB memory would probably be a worth while investment thumb.gif

Any time I fire up Steam on my rMBP, I just run everything at 1280x800. I don't really use it for gaming at all, but Source games run on the piss-slowest hardware anyway, so it's nice while waiting in the airport terminal or in a hotel room on business trips (when hockey isn't on TV).

edit: I should mention that I do have the 2.6GHz/8GB model, but I seriously doubt 4GB will be an issue for you.

Okay guys thanks, hopefully the memory compression thing does work out in a way that 4gb ~ 6gb, so i won't have to worry about it. Maybe the most memory hungry thing I'd do on it is some light Aperture. But this is for school so essay writing and web browsing will happen 80% of the time its being used.

Unless you're editing huge film scans or have recently purchased a D800, using Aperture I wouldn't second guess. The color accuracy would be the selling point for me in your scenario, and a 1440x900 TN panel is just atrocious for $1199.

4GB will be fine for what you do.
I'd only say 8 if you plan on doing content creation with Adobe, Editing, 3D or CAD on a daily basis.
