HiFiman HE-500 with a Xonar STX

I wonder will the STX be enough amp power to drive these headphones to it's potentials? Or do I need a real amplifier?

Wow, the audio forum is the deadest part of OCN, such a shame.

Well yes, your STX will be enough. The HiFiman HE-500 is not a hard to drive set of cans, with sensitivity 89dB, impedance 38Ω. An ipod is enough to drive them at good listening levels.

What the guy above me said.

I second that.

STX has a whole lotta impedence chops.

Thanks for the input guys, but do you think a FIIO E17 ALPEN + E09K combo would give these headphones better power to drive better sound out of these headphones? or just stick with my STX? I been contemplating on a external amp + dac combo but I don't know if I should spend alot of money on it if my STX can drive them to it's potentials.

you have $700 headphones... spend the money.

Fiio products will not be an upgrade over the Asus Xonar Essence STX. that Emotiva amplifier only cost $175 and you can drive speakers with it too or buy a headphone amplifier.

I drive a pair of Sennheiser HD650s from my STX and I was unable to tell the difference between it and a $400 Heed Canamp. The STX packs a lot of punch.

I don't think the Heed Canamp is a very good headphone amplifier. it's got a cheap power supply, cheap capacitors, cheap resistors, cheap diodes, cheap RCA connectors. there is a big modding thread on it and people have literally replaced everything except the board, chassis and alps pot. the only thing I like is the high pressure jack.

edit: there are much better headphone amplifiers for the HD650. I left my Asus Essence ST behind a long time ago thumb.gif

For what it's worth, E09K uses the same output amplifier chip (if you will) as the Asus Essence line, except the E09K's noise level is generally higher. And Essence line's D/A might be a little cleaner than E17.

You might want to be a little more specific in defining "to its potentials" if you want a better-defined answer. Of course you can always do better in audio when it comes to the analog electronics, but there comes a point where better might not even by distinguishable to you and a point before that where slightly better may not be worth the extra money. And product pricing is weakly correlated with quality, so beware.

I think hes going with the Burson HA-160DS.
