PCs are not cheaper in the long run for most considering you'll be upgrading every 2-3 years or less and buying new peripherals time to time.
Now, if you buy a PC and leave it for 5 years and only buy games on sale you would be 110% correct.
The issue with your point is you're not considering sales for console, buying used, discounts, etc.
I play both sides and I've easily got 5x the money into my PC, literally. My 250GB 360 with Forza 4, Halo 4, Skyrim, BOII, L4D2, XBL, and another controller was $350 new on BF a year ago.
My graphics card alone was more than that..
