The reason I think it is a little loony, and I don't mean that in any kind of offensive way, is that while I am sure they run everything you play you have two fairly hot, fairly power hungry cards you use to achieve that and SLI does not always work well in all games. I just think there are better solutions. Also the framebuffer is a major limitation at higher resolutions on those 480's.
So its great you got a good deal, its just not something I would run.
I completely understand. But the 480s are under water. So I have 55W per card saved because its underwater. Trust me, I tested both.
I had a 7970 and it ran 1300MHz core. It was a fast card. I am debating on getting some used 7970's for around $450.
As much as I am for AMD and how much better their drivers are, I prefer Nvidia. I just like it better. I had a few issues with the 7970 but I understand that it has gotten a lot better. Especially with frame pacing.
As for the current situation, going 580's is a waste. Going 680s doesn't make sense since I see them as the half cards of what they were suppose to be. I like the gtx780 but its expensive for what you get. As for why 2? well its preference again. I like seeing 2 cards in the system watercooled. It's just me.
