Experience with USB hard drive docks (I'm full of questions)

Thread Starter
What are some advantages of USB hard drive docks and enclosures over external hard drives? OR the other way around?

Looking for opinions, and maybe some favorite/recommended brands and why?
Thanks!

They are exactly the same. As long as USB and Sata specs are the same there is no difference. The only advantages are the obvious ones of durability and the ability to remove the HDD.
I would choose the one that best suits you budget and is the most durable.

I really like my WD Passport because it only uses one USB port and it's small.

I have one in usb2 i'm happy with it so far.
It's useful when you have lot of hdd's to swap but if i had a pc case with more hdd's space i would use sata directly. The only big disavandtage i see is they gather dust.

Pick one with usb3 if you can

One local reseller i buy stuff from told me these docks don't last long generally, told me he tried 2-3 and they all went south not long after.
