Is it pretty much a consensus that the Motorola is the best?

Who's your ISP?

They may have a supported device list as well. While any modem should work but it's easier to get support.

Comcast has this: http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/

Time Warner. The guy in the next cube actually has the one I just ordered. I went with the SB6141.

Does installing a new modem effect the OS in anyway what so ever? Does it change the files in anyway?

Nope. Just make sure to register it with your ISP and enjoy.

I have it installed. Is there any firmware I must use or anything I should do to get better ping/bandwidth?
