New keyboard advice please

Thread Starter
I'm in the market for a new keyboard but I'm really not sure where to start.

Location: UK
Any keyboards you currently have in mind: Not really sure, I really like Ducky and WASD boards
Price: £150 as an absolute maximum but would rather it be lower
Backlighting (yes (colour?)/ no ): Yes, don't mind what colour as long as it's not something brash like purple or pink
Size (60%, TKL, full size etc): Full size
Use (games/ programming/ typing etc): Games, typing, just everything really
USB/ PS2: USB
KRO: Don't mind, most boards are 20+ anyway
Macro keys (yes/ no): No
Media keys (yes/ no): Yes
Layout (US/ ANSI, etc): UK
Switch type: MX Browns

Any help would be greatly appreciated! biggrin.gif

Have you owned or typed on a mechanical keyboard before? If so which ones. If you haven't tried that many switches I would say that you should try as many as you can and then decide upon which switch you want instead of just reading something about the switches and choosing one. The right switch is all down to personal preference, not just what their supposed uses are. Also do you want completely separate dedicated media keys like on the corsair k70 and logitech g710 or just like on cooler master's board where the function keys serve as the media keys?

So here we go these are my suggestions:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CH-9000050-UK-Vengeance-Performance-Mechanical/dp/B00FLVID0W/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1382838204&sr=8-5&keywords=corsair+k70

I would recommend a cooler master board but using amazon.co.uk I had trouble finding out exactly which switch each of the options were, but it may be because I am in the US, just search on amazon for cooler master keyboard and look for a fullsize one with browns and backlighting, they are usually the cheapest mechanical boards out there, but they are good boards. Also as a stated they don't have dedicated media keys.

If you want ducky boards look here https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/search.php?keyword=&switch_id=2&size=Full+Size&man=1&key_plastic=ALL&interface=ALL&cord_length=ALL&usb_kro=ALL&ps2_kro=ALL&x=50&y=19&in_stock=on

You can decide which ones you want according to price, they do not have dedicated media keys but instead use fn + some keys to control volume but you can also use a program to set certain macros for keys. Also this is an American website I could not find a British version, but I think they will ship to the United Kingdom.

WASD boards are of high quality so if you want one, go ahead, but they are pretty expensive, the cheapest one including keycaps is 149 dollars (I couldn't find/access a british version of the website) and according to google that is 92.12 pounds (at the time of writing this). Also remember you would have to ship it from the US. They don't have usb pass through like the cm and corsair boards, or fancy backlighting though. http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/wasd-v2-104-key-custom-mechanical-keyboard.html

There is logitech's g710 http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Mechanical-Keyboard-Tactile-High-Speed/dp/B009C98NPY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382839131&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+g710
It only comes it browns and comes with media keys, macro keys, volume bar, USB pass through, orange, and removable rubber o-rings.

So bam, those are the keyboards I would recommend but read my thing in the beginning.

I really like my full size Ducky Shine 2 with white LEDs and MX Brown switches... seems to fit everything you said almost perfectly but I don't know if the switches are printed for the US layout not UK.

You might want to check out some of the Cooler Master CM Storm keyboards. The Quick Fire Ultimate seems to fit what you want pretty well, other than wrong brand and I have know idea of price near you.

http://www.cmstorm.com/en/products/keyboards/QuickFireUltimate/

I have a couple of their tk-less boards (2 MX Blue Quick Fire Rapid, 1 MX Brown Quick Fire Stealth). They are built decently (have some chips out of the base paint, all keys are fine though), cheap, and sold down the road from me. Also I never have to worry about my Quick Fire Stealth getting stolen at work. All my co-workers are baffled when they attempt to use a keyboard with the letters on the side of the keys.

That said, I really want to get a custom WASD board, I'll get one as soon as I decide what I want printed on it (that may be a while).

Edit:
If you are consider the Corsair keyboard recommended by Lubed Up Slug, I would recommend finding a place you can try it before you buy it. Was looking at one before before almost buying it. Quickly decided against it. Not sure if it was the switches (think they were MX Red) or the way the keys were raised that I didn't like. It was just weird to type on.

I like the CM Trigger, which has all the backlighting similar to a Ducky for slightly less money although the visual appeal is slightly lower in my perspective. (Always like CM because they sponsor our favorite CM_Polt!!! biggrin.gif )
