It's turning out that the Hawaii series just generally kind of sucks at overclocking redface.gif

I'm thinking of trading for a GTX 780 Classified but haven't decided yet smile.gif

Interesting cards. I now have 2 R9 290's, a Powercolor and an MSI. The Powercolor was flashed and is now a fully functional R9 290X, the MSI was unfortunately locked, so remains vanilla. To be honest it is not a major issue as there is not a whole lot of difference in performance once the R9 290's are running at the same clocks...

Has anyone tested the various R9 290 bios' that are available at TechPowerUp? I am curious if any are performing better than others due to higher power limits or voltage options?

Most likely I will just flash both of my cards with the Powercolor bios as this is factory overclocked to 975mhz....

I did notice both cards throttling at anything less than 55% fan speed when Power Limit was set to 150%, not really a problem for me as I will be watercooling, still it was interesting to see the core speed drop from 975mhz to 830-860mhz when temps hit 94C...

Shame on AMD for releasing a decent card with crappy stock cooler.....

I'm hoping when custom cooler cards arrive someone will buy one with intentions of water cooling but will want to trade for a reference PCB. I'm not crazy about the after market air coolers available (gelid and ac, etc). Not that the performance is bad, just not aesthetically pleasing to my eyes.

I think its more to do with bad drivers and/or bad bios atm Sometimes i can mine for days with 920 1500 or 1000 1400 on stock volts other times i lock up or black screen straight away or after an hour or so, same happens with benching.

sometimes i get bsod from atikmdag sometimes i get corrupted display drivers and i have to run ddu in safe mode and fresh install drivers.

Im currently mining downclocked to 800 1000 with -100 volts getting 650kh and still able to use pc and watch videos etc. its been running for 3 days now with no errors

Running ddu and a fresh install of drivers fixes most of my problems for a while at least.

Actually I just sold my EVGA Classified 780 and bought a new R9 290 plus EK Waterblock for the same price....

Having used both, the Classified is definitely the faster card when both are running at stock. I was easily able to overclock the Classified making it even faster (+140mhz on the core), however once the AMD card hits 1100mhz plus it begins to catch up and it is actually faster currently at 2560x1440 in BF4 based on my experience.

I only play BF4 so went with AMD for Mantle. After using both cards I can say that I prefer the IQ from the R9 290 in this game as there is less texture shimmering...

Before the GTX 780 I had a pair of GTX 670's in SLI and before this I had an HD 5970 (which I did not like)....

I did not really expect to like the R9 290, however I like it so much I bought another for CF and will look at one of the new 4K Dell monitors in 2014....

EDIT: Has anyone determined if the bios switch on the R9 290 actually does anything?

It's the same bios on both switches iirc.
