I dont understand the fuss about the noise.. yes, they ARE noisy, but no more than any other card i remember owning.. When i overclocked my crossfired 5850's they required me to up the fan profile and they were also really loud - comparable to a 290 at 70% to 80% fan speed ... it was the straw that broke the camel's back into moving me into watercooling..

290's at the 47 - 50% arent that bad at all - i could have tolerated them in gaming rig with stock cooler but i have put them into my custom loop anyway ( to see if they would overclock better - but they didn't )

To tell you the truth the fan on my single Corsair 1050HX PSU beats the noise the crossfired 290's were making.

Not sure why all of a sudden a major issue... can't help but think its negative hype generated from the other side that has caught on....

yea, nothing.

today I updated my Bf4 to the latest patch, I fired it up, I see flickering textures in Crossfire. I'm like, gee, thanks dice, I switch CF off, go in game, half in the round the game goes black, hard reboot.

I really don't have time to waste like that.... wish amd said something is it hardware is it software? It's not happenening like everytime, but once a day maybe or so...

Seconded, my 6970 CF was LOUD, i didn't grab a 2nd 290x for CF but no way it could be louder, these cards are actually quite tame until you go above 65-75% fan speed, which you only need for benching, not 24/7 stuff

The problem is that noise is totally subjective, not only in volume but also in pitch. For someone with a water cooled system, like me, the 290 was intolerably loud even at 47%, but for someone with a large case running 4 or 6 medium speed fans it would be totally acceptable. The biggest problem I had with the stock cooler was the pitch - the GTX 580 and 680 both made a whooshing air sound, while the 290 had a more whistling tone which was quite annoying. But again, everyone's perception and tolerance is going to vary, the only way to really know how it's going to affect you is to try it yourself.

I do wonder though, if the perception changes based on what card you are coming from. I've seen a lot of people compare it favorably to 6970s and 7970s, with less favorable comparisons from people with 680s and Titans. So maybe AMD coolers just sound different than Nvidia coolers.

Well Nvidia and AMD Ref coolers have different fan blade designs so i'd imagine that the pitch would be different along with the way the air interacts with the fins of the heatsink itself.

I haven't had an Nvidia card for a fair while now and when i did it didn't have a fan tongue.gif

it is interesting though, my Storm Trooper has 5 120mm fans in it and they are quite noisy so that and the old 6970 CF setup i had might be a factor in my opinion of the 290/x noise levels..

Well, after reviewing a whole bunch of different GTX780's i'm glad to have my unlocked 290 back.
It's quite a lot faster in Battlefield 4, which is my main game at the moment, then the GTX780.
Also, a 1320Mhz GTX780 cannot compete with a 1150Mhz 290X. Not even a bit.

My 290 is cooled by a Accelero Hybrid with the back piece cut out of the stock heatsink and bolted back on for VRM cooling.
Running 1160Mhz core, 1500Mhz VRAM at +100mV in MSI AB (~1.25v load) and the core stays at about 55c load. VRM's with the Hybrid's fan module on there barely touch 60c.

I wish I had some more room in the voltage but the card starts to drop HDMI connection and give short flashes of ''No Input'' when I use GPU Tweak and use any voltage above 1.30v such as 1.412v.
On 1.412v the card just loses all connections and screen goes on stand by when applying load to the card.

Anyone know how to fix this?
Thundahcat.

You are good up to ~ 90c, but efficiency drops, more noise is produced - not so stable oc. This, vrm's are rated up to 120c, but that's too much. He recommended not to exceed 85c.

I know, i'm just saying, because not all go for same oc. I saw some owners get like 85-90c on the vrms with customs cooling.

What oc/fan speed you run?

Yeah, it kinda sucks but I think this is more supply and demand than price gouging (at least on AMD's part). When you are constantly running something out of stock it makes sense to raise the price to slow down the turnover and make a bit more profit. That's business. I think in the end this will be good for everyone. AMD is getting a chance to make some money (which will help them make better future products). The miners are happy, and eventually the prices will come down.

Plus, AMD introducing these at such a fair/low price is what forced Nvidia to drop prices. Its really funniest what happened to Nvidia if you ask me. They were the ones that were price gouging, then had to lower in order to keep sales volume, and now the miners are buying up every AMD card on the planet. Kinda funny actually. We just gotta hang on till its all over. I say good for AMD.

You can still get these for a fair price at MC. I posted how to do it a while back here. It works.
