I'm putting together a comparison with a 780 Lightning and a 290 and I'm getting very inconsistent results at max clocks with my 290. I have benchmarks in various games at stock clocks, 1150/1450, and 1285/1400. I've tried both the Asus and PT1 bioses and still get inconsistent results. Voltage is at +219mV (~1.289V under load) and after looping Heaven for 10 minutes, the core is at 45C and the VRMs hit 69C (using EK block).

In Crysis 3 I get the same fps at 1150/1450 and 1285/1400 (1600p max settings). At 1285/1400 I can make one 3-minute run through just fine but when I go to repeat it I always get a black screen and have to reset my computer. Same thing at 1275/1400.

Core clocks and voltage remain pretty steady while benching so it doesn't appear to be throttling.

Any ideas?

I am using 1080p. Also thanks for the reply on the the previous page, I don't plan on using any water cooling for my GPU at the moment. I assume the non reference R9 290 prices will not drop so I may get the 780, I just hope I don't max out the VRAM on that as well when playing a game with really high res textures or lots of mods.

Its bad to run them over 80c stability wise, if you want top oc- and stability. The electrician said, it would be best to aim for 50-60c thumb.gif
Definitely, you are good to go, great in fact smile.gif

What fan speed/oc you run?
Now that sounds accurate to me thumb.gif

9.2 > 13.12 in 3DMark...I get really bad scores, like 3k less with 13.12, not sure why.

I think I found out why my scores are not so great too...I think my PSU is on the limit when my CPU is at 4.8 & my GPU's 1230...

I just scored 28492 with 4.7ghz, 1175/1400...http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/7685166, tess off...compared to 28840 http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/7658463 with 4.8, 1225/1350.

The only thing I can think of is my PSU being on the limit and when running the later tests I did get some random shut downs, must get a bigger PSU now.

Has anybody noticed some strangeness going on with AMD's powerboost technology ?

i have posted this about it (@ bottom off post) : http://www.overclock.net/t/1437876/290-and-290x-litecoin-mining-performance/870#post_21423549

it seems something throttles back after half an hour of full load but i cant get any report on what it exactly is that is happening.

i have read about "tom's" experience with the FAULTY boards . that had something wrong on them .

seems a bit like what i am experiencing. after half an hour off load i can clearly hear it spin down on the fanspeed, nothing changes in the monitor readout anywhere, no fanspeed change no powerusage change, no GPU or MEM speed changes, NOTHING.

yet its very clearly audible and the calculation speed goes up slightly so it runs like more relaxed all off a sudden.

might it be AMD's powertune that wants to push too hard ?? i think it might just be that.

Grtz

Joe, check your VDDC. it seems that the latest whql added about 0.12v to it - at least that's what GPUz showed for my 290 at idle. This also raised my idle temp by about 3C, so went back to 13.11 WHQL.

3GB will be more than enough for 1080 even with modded Skyrim - me thinks.
