I'm pretty sure memory clocks don't do a whole lot for mining. You need to get more out of the core clock to increase your hashrate.
For the 290 and 290x this is actually completely wrong. The opposite is actually true. More often than not, an underclock to the mid 900s helps hashrate, accompanied by 1500MHz VRAM. At least, at 20 intensity. At lower intensities core clock increases help.

is it possible that GPU temperature is affected by high vrm1 temp? vrm1 was at 110C before i turned off mining and it was still on the rise

Jeez! Hate to ask, but are you sure the fans are working properly?

Yes, the fans are both spinning at 2000 rpm, i connected them to the gpu so they are on all the time with constant speed...

The chips circled in blue are all of the VRMs, right? 15 in total. Did I miss any?

I picked up a pack of these tiny little heatsinks to go on the chips when I get my NZXT G10 on monday. They come with thermal tape on them, so I don't have to mess with permanently attaching them. Already spoke to XFX and they say they will honor the warranty as long as it can be returned to stock condition and you don't cause physical damage in the process.

I know these things are tiny, but there was a youtube video of a guy testing his 290x with a G10 with and without VRM heatsinks. He used some big ones and the temp difference was 30-50 degrees C at times. So I'm hoping for around 10-20C difference with these little things. Which would keep them out of the 90C range.

Interesting, I haven't mined on a 290, I used to mine with my 7950 and 7970 and I actually would underclock the memory to cut down on power and it had no effect to the hashrate. Core clock was the only thing that mattered. But you learn something new everyday!

Same here - its very odd. When I first tried mining on my unlocked 290 I was super disappointed. At some point I found that when I lowered power limit increased hashrate.. Low and behold, I find it is from the lower core clock later on. 938MHz core and 1500MHz memory yeild best results [~890KHash], any small deviation reduces it significantly. Like 1499MHz ram is low 700s.

Hm, I dont know what to say. Can you download HWInfo and check VRM1 Power Out?

Great, thanks! smile.gif Wouldnt have paid a penny more, but it should be nice for testing overclocks..

Going back to my original question, can one of you please point me to the page number in this thread that talks about re-using stock heatsink for vrm cooling in combination with gelid fan?

You're going to destroy your stock cooler which you might need to send the card back for warranty work in the future.

I would just get two packs of these...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835708011

They can probably be found for cheaper, Newegg is just hella easy to navigate, lol.
