Hi guys I'm now under water with 2 290's (Sapphire and HIS). Please update me, cheers.

Proof

Rig pic

Running these things in crossfire using stock cooler with only 1 slot spacing is really not a long term option as the noise was unbearable, although I liked to keep the temps below 80c instead of the ridiculous 95c target.

Anyone thinking of watercooling the reference 290(X) don't hesitate you will see 50c knocked off the load temp with decent size rad(s).

All the best for the new year smile.gif

Only voltage. And even so, voltage helps hynix just as much as it helps elpida.

that's actually what I meant. I didn't try myself but asus bios allows voltage tweaking in gpu tweak ? like I said, I didn't try myself, it's gibbo says here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=25174104&postcount=290

So is that way working ASUS bios for R9-290? I have Saphire in a week under water so what is the best BIOS for OC 290? to reach the best results?

Yes use some Unigine especially Valley is now the most popular or FurMark to get your card frying to its max temps. But be careful with air cooling.

I've read a number of the first posts a while back but haven't followed this now massive thread. I have a couple questions.

1. Do the XFX 290x reference cards have a known memory type?

2. What is the power consumption at the wall for two 290x's with say a 4770k or equivalent?

3. Then for those that have two reference cards just the opinion on the noise and how you handle it.
I'd be interested in custom cards, putting one would be fine but I'm afraid two would be too much heat inside my case.

4. Does MSI afterburner support overvolting now on all 290/x's? (at launch it didn't but was "coming")

It's mixed Elipdia and Hynix, so far the only confirmed all Hynix card would be Asus's DCUII version of the card.

Don't have any answer for the 2nd question as I have no experience with 4770k

I used my own fan curve maxing at 72% at Power limit +10% to prevent it from throttling. at 72% max fan speed (40% fan speed at 40C to 72% fan speed at 85C) the noise in my perspective is irrelevant specially when gaming since I am more focused on the game and not the noise, I guess I am just better at filtering out noise to what is important to hear at that time. Some people like me, even in a noisy environment can separate noise from important audio so it doesn't affect me much. this question would be answered differently by different people as its a matter of preferences.

and yes, MSI afterburner does support every card now with over volting of +100mV while Sapphire TrixX supports upto +200mV, AB does have an extra option of over volting the "AUX" voltage which i am not sure (and I think no one actually 100% certain) what it is adding voltage to, some say its probably the PLL voltage.. I wouldn't really go over +50mV on it until I see a confirmation on what exactly that affects.. altho when increasing it makes it easier for me to get a stable clock on core clocks.

I actually am waiting for my Kraken G10 to arrive so I can pair it with my Kraken X40 to tame this card. But I couldn't resist moving a few sliders in MSI AB. I got to 1100Mhz core clock with stock voltage, is that considered good? I use BF3 to see if it is stable, is this a good choice? When setting it to 1150 I get a "crash" and artifacts. Crash refers to MSI AB not responding at all, my mouse disappearing and BF3 glitching. And is the safe voltage of this card already found out?

Yeah, you can safely max out the voltage in AB if your temperatures are kept in check, but personally, I do +60mV for my 24/7 clocks.

Hey there,

I am ready to press the order button on my 290(X) but I am not sure about two things. The 290 and 290x are very close to each other and some may say that the 290X is not worth the extra money. Does this also count when I add it into my waterloop? I only find reviews where they compare a reference 290 vs a reference 290x. In other words, has the 290x more oc-potentional when placed in a waterloop?

Secondly, is there a difference between the sapphire and asus bios? Are they both voltage unlocked or do I need a modified bios?

Thanks in advance.
