1000 watts is going to be cutting it razor thin close with 3 cards. Your going to be at 100% capacity if not more with 3 cards.

No stickers on either of my cards (Sapphire and HIS). Didn't even have the piece of paper under the stock cooler on the HIS model like some have reported.

As for coil whine I had a little when I first got them but only at stupidly high fps 500/1000+ and now they're watercooled I only notice a slight hiss when running Ice storm/Cloud gate (powered by Enermax Revolution 85+ 1050W - 6x 12v rails, 30A each (both cards have their own rail)).

GPU-Z doesn't read the VRM temps, but HWiNFO does. Thanks and REP+.

What are you using to monitor you +12V because I've just noticed that my +12V rails are also reporting 11.6v idle using HWMonitor which I think is incorrect. Try using the latest HWiNFO64 thumb.gif... idle I'm at 12.1v and average 12.0v.

Very nice! Do the blowers keep the VRMS cool, and are you using a custom heatsink on them?

Hey guys my first post here smile.gif Just got my R9 290 Sapphire last week and man was I impressed! That is until the black screens started. Ive scoured the net for the past week or so looking into this and it seems to be a pretty widespread problem.

What I can't find is any official comment on it or any real fixes. Has AMD said anything? Is there any real way of fixing this? Does anyone know what's causing this too happen?

I checked the memory type of my GPU and saw that it was Elpdia and not Hinyx. From what Ive read up to now is that almost all if not all the people with this problem have Elpdia memory on their boards.

My question really is what should I do? Is there anything I can do myself or should I just send it back and hope to get one with Hinyx memory?

I'm exhausted trying to fix this. I can't figure it out myself and I would love any advice/help possible at this point.

Thank you so much in advance.

My system specs if it matters...

i5 2500k @ 4.2
Radeon R9 290 Sapphire
Sabertooth P67
Rocketfish 700wPS2
8 gigs ram Gskill @ 1600
Windows 7 64 bit

Using the latest AMD drivers.

Black screens when playing certain games at random times, sometimes I can get hours of play in, sometimes not even 5 minutes. Other games like DOTA2 and BF4 seem to work flawlessly every time. Which is quite strange to me but it might just be random luck.

Prexxus, check the temperature of your card.
I don't let mine pass 85C (I use MSI Afterburner and set FAN SPEED % to "User Defined", that way it can increase the FAN speed according to the temperature increase... if you don't use it, the default AIT Catalyst driver will let your card reach 90/95C and start to decrease the clockspeed to mantain the temperature...).

I used to get blackscreen before i start keep an eye on the temperature. Note that today i'm running my card (a unlocked R290 modded to R290x with bios change, with standard AMD cooler - It is a XFX), at 1080mhz for the core and 1250mhz for the memory... sometimes my FAN Speed reach 60% - i think the maximum fan speed for the default Catalyst driver is 50%..)

resuming, try to increase the FAN speed, and see what happens... smile.gif

Plz reply if it helped you! (Hope it will... smile.gif

Just an update, sent my R9 290 back for a refund (due to blackscreens) and got an R9 290x instead.

Old Card: Sapphire R9 290
New Card : Sapphire R9 290X BF4 Edition

Also to add confirmation, the new Sapphire R9 290X card came with Elpida memory, but works absolutely fine, runs happily at 1110/1325 (would go higher, but haven't had enough time).
