damn I noticed today that my pc freezes within 5 seconds after I play any video on youtube....even on everything stock (except custom fan profile in AB)

also tried to increase the voltage to +100mV and keep the speeds stock and still freezes....even tried to return to cpu to stock to rule it out....nothing seems to help

and I changed the graphic cards (still have both of them) and it still freezes with the other 290 card as well

I can play games/bench without any problems OCed or stock....using regular catalyst 13.12...as always I did uninstall, clear with driver sweeper (twice to be sure) and then restart before updating the drivers

according to gpu-z log it switches to 501/1250.0 and 1.234v when I start the video

I have aero turned off which I remember used to keep switching my 6950/6970 between 2D clocks and 2D/3D (the clocks kinda halfway between 2D and 3D)

any ideas?

found a thread on OCN abou the same issue
http://www.overclock.net/t/1440334/r9-290x-driver-causes-video-playback-to-freeze-pc

but I can play local divx/mp4 files fine (bsplayer+cccp)
also I have the flash hw acceleration turned off iirc and using latest Firefox (non-beta, not aurora) and using flash 10.3

I've had fittings with about 1-2mm space between them for 6 months now, haven't had a problem with them. But do try to tighten them as much as possible, I use two hands for more surface area and thus better grip. Can get them half a rotation or so more by doing that.

Try using sapphire trixx to see if maybe the OC software your using is causing the problem. Also what BIOS are you on?

happens even with the AB not running (and not being stared on os startup)...or with it running on all stock just with custom fan curve

I can play local divx/mp4 files fine (bsplayer+cccp)
also I have the flash hw acceleration turned off iirc and using latest Firefox (non-beta, not aurora) and using flash 10.3

bios is stock, not touched it, using the silent mode (at least I guess that's how they are shipped, the fan never got over 48% when I first tested it)

edit: hmm I just noticed that chrome (which uses different flash version than firefox) plays youtube fine and has the hw acceleration turned on

edit2: using htm5 playback it runs ok even in firefox...you can switch to html5 on http://www.youtube.com/html5

If there was no vdroop or if you remove vdroop by using the command line in msi afterburner (check the guru3d forms for the command), it will make your card run MUCH, MUCH hotter. ONLY advisable on subzero.

It sounds like you are talking about two different things. Vdroop is the drop in voltage that occurs under a heavy load, due to the power delivery system not adequately compensating for the increased current draw.  Purposely reducing the voltage (and clock speed) to control temps and power is PowerTune.  You may be seeing both with Furmark/Kombuster, but there are two different things at play there.

You don't need the rings to touch the fitting itself, it's fine for there to be a gap there (unless you are trying to eliminate it for aesthetics).  You might want to back the rings off and check to be sure you aren't cutting into the hose by tightening them too much.

I moved the Sapphire R9 290 into my other PC, and welcomed these two leafblowers.
The top card gets too hot and throttles to ~700MHz even with the fan @%65 and 20C Ambient. mad.gif

Couple of things:

Make sure your case has very good airflow. You have 550 watts of heat being generated in your case by your cards alone, that needs to get out ASAP. A side fan blowing cool air directly onto the GPUs is a must.

Replace the thermal paste on both cards with some aftermarket paste (Arctic MX 4 usually works best). Make sure to clean the chips properly first, you can look up how to do this online, pretty simple). Apply a small amount of MX or similar paste to the middle of the chip (a pea sized amount should do, even a bit less). Tightening the cooler plate back onto it will spread it out evenly.

Gains of 10 degrees or more can be had from this, and used in conjunction with proper airflow, you should be able to minimise (or even eradicate throttling).
