Hello again, I have a VERY important info for you. After many hundereds of tests, and reinstalling many versions of drivers and Trixx and AB etc. I found this
MSI Afterburner version 17 can manage your R9-290 RAM at least 1700Mhz but the core may become unstable since 1150Mhz
MSI Afterburner version 18 can manage your R9-290 RAM at max 1600Mhz but the core is stable at atleast 1200 Mhz
It means to get the best OC results you have to use a trixx with AB together to set higher core voltage. Or wait for MSI and hope that they'llmix the best of theese last versions together.

I'm building up a box with an Asus Maximus Extreme VI and 3x ATI R9 290 video cards. I'm dismayed to note I can't fit these video cards in slots A2, B2, or 3, because the 10 SATA connectors at the far edge of the board, which are stacked 2 high, interfere with the video card. I can put the video cards in slots 1 and 4 only, which is where I presently have them, but this does not allow for CrossfireX configuration. I've ordered some 15cm PCI riser cables for greater flexibility, but am wondering if there's a simpler trick. What is standard practice in this case? Does anyone else have this problem? If so, what did you do to work around it?

Hey I have exactly the same setup as you, except mine are watercooled. I had no issues with my GPUs in 1, A2, and 3....the SATA ports are 90 degrees (instead of shooting straight up) so dont have any issues with clearance. Not sure what problem you are having...I think my SATA3 ports are 80% filled up and have no issues.

But the drivers are very bad, if I OC it much, Im getting every start of PC black screen. So I have to uninstal (by ATIman) drivers and install again.
AMD again gain its title as Almost Made Drivers.
So I hope in few weeks come out better drivers and better update for AB. Because the GPU at clocks near 1200 Mhz realy needs more thans 100mV +

You need to not set AB to start with windows and set profile 1 to your stock settings, this will prevent a bad oc from being forced on (thus causing your boot issues). I personally suggest the asus.rom bios and GPUtweak for these cards if overclocking is the priority. This isnt a driver issue.

After running 11 of these cards, i have yet to have the driver crash without it being my fault (overclocking or otherwise). If your blackscreening and crashing when overclocked, what do you think the problem really is?

Second, ATIman IS NOT SUGGESTED ANY LONGER. It mucks up more then helps at this point. Use DDU from guru3d.net, best uninstaller for both amd and nvidia.

Last, there is a way to increase the AB voltage limit and remove llc (vdroop), but seeing the issues you are reporting, I dont think that is safe for you lol.

i only use Trixx to get 1320/1620 to bench my 290. it comes down to silicon lottery i guess. have you tried to lower your memory oc while increasing your core to get better results in benches?

edit: at 1300 i have to max out VDDC offset.

I have to agree with you.
I own a reference asus 290 and the best combination are asus rom ver 1 and gputweak.
Asus try to solve some problems with black screens on asus rom ver 2 but I have lower scores with this.
Maybe they change memory timings on the second bios version.

Do you guys think a 4.4GHz 3570K would hold back two R9 290s? What about a stock i5?
Hi all since I stated here on the 290(x) forums that BF4 was stuttering like mad with my trifire R9 290s I wanted to clarify the issue now that I have mostly solved it and dont want to spread misconceptions...the majority of the problem at least was not due to R9 290s or drivers.

Solution....unpark ur cores...i7 + windows 7 = stutter. With the fix definitely felt a HUGE difference. I didnt believe it for the longest time so didnt try but ya...makes a big difference. Still get stutters here and there but at least the major hiccups are now gone.

Yes a Kuhler 620 would be enough to keep the core cool. The fan alone should keep the VRMs at an acceptable temp, but rigging up some heatsinks from something else would be even better. A couple poeple cut up old CPU coolers or something to make some, you'd just need some thermal tape or something to hold them on.
