Using AB 3.0.0 Beta 17, once you have applied your overclock you must go back into CCC and reset the Power Limit back to 50% again. Even though it says it's 50% in AB it's NOT 50% in CCC.

However IF CCC is disabled you DO NOT ENABLE OVERDRIVE in CCC and your AB settings will work.

NOTE: Whenever you set a new clock and your screen flashes you need to bump the power limit back up in CCC as well as it resets every time the driver does.

Run afterburner install. At this point, if you choose default install directory, there will incur security issues later on, just keep that in mind. I would recommend you install it in another folder/drive.

If you are crossfired follow A- below to disable ULPS if you are using Unofficial Overclock Method (UOM) or , you can skip this portion if you are using Official Overclock Method (-xcl), however be warned that Afterburner will not be able to see your sleeping cards if you have ULPS enabled. Thus it's probably a good idea to disable ULPS anyways.

A- Disabling ULPS

Open regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This key 4D36E968, under CurrentControlSet is the only folder you need to access. You can ignore the others, so don't search for it just traverse directly to said folder. It's time to disable ULPS, or ultra low power savings. Inside the folder you will find more folders, 0000/0001/0002/etc so on and on.

Open each folder and double click on EnableULPS and change to 0. You do not need to change any other key, or any keys that look similar, just change EnableULPS. Close regedit. End of A-

At this point if you installed into default directory, you will have a security issue. Open file manager, go to where you installed afterburner and right click on MSIAfterburner.cfg and go to security, click edit, add yourself and give yourself full control, click ok.

Now go back and open MSIAfterburner.cfg in notepad.

Scroll to bottom and change this:

**Note on the mode setting. Some new games are causing clock conflicts with Powerplay creating flickering on the desktop. You can avoid this by choosing 2, instead of 1. I am running with Powerplay off. Look Mom, no flickering. Refer to the bottom of Post 2 (in source 'The AMD How To Thread" ) for more info on this.**

Close and save MSIAfterburner.cfg. At this point download the file from the link above for AMD Clock Control files and run it. Do not reboot.

Now you can run afterburner for the first time. Afterburner will analyze the gpu asic and ask to reboot when ready. Choose yes to reboot. After reboot, you will have afterburner installed, you can then unlock voltage control and monitoring, etc. Happy overclocking.

Just use /wi4,30,8d,10 for 100mv. The offset is 6.25 mv in hexademical. So on decimal is :16*6.25=100 mv. For 50mv you need 8. For 200mv you need 20( 20=32 on dec. So 32 * 6.25=200mv)

The easy way to do changes:

Create a txt on desktop. Write
CD C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner
MSIAfterburner.exe /wi4,30,8d,10

and then save as .bat file. Eveyrtime you start this bat file msi will start with +100mv

For 50mv: 8
For 100mv:10
For 125mv:14
For 150mv:18
For 175mv:1C
For 200mv:20

I wouldn't go over this point because
1)You are close to leave the sweet spot of the ref pcb vrms efficiency
2)These commands add 200mv on top of the 100mv offset through AB gui.That means 300mv

By default /wi command apply to current gpu only. So if you have 2 or more gpus you must use /sg command. That means the command line is something like that

I will try booting with just one GPU at a time but I don't think it will work.

There's probably a newer one, but:
BSOD codes for overclocking
0x101 = increase vcore
0x124 = increase/decrease vcore or QPI/VTT...have to test to see which one it is
0x0A = unstable RAM/IMC, increase QPI first, if that doesn't work increase vcore
0x1E = increase vcore
0x3B = increase vcore
0x3D = increase vcore
0xD1 = QPI/VTT, increase/decrease as necessary
0x9C = QPI/VTT most likely, but increasing vcore has helped in some instances
0x50 = RAM timings/Frequency or uncore multi unstable, increase RAM voltage or adjust QPI/VTT, or lower uncore if you're higher than 2x
0x109 = Not enough or too Much memory voltage
0x116 = Low IOH (NB) voltage, GPU issue (most common when running multi-GPU/overclocking GPU)

The clock speed is dynamic on the R9 290X and R9 290 via a 2nd generation serial VID interface, which is a new controller interface designed by AMD. The controller allows a 6.25mV voltage step granularity and 255 voltage steps between 0.00V to 1.55V. There is a dedicated SVI2 Telemetry line providing voltage and current feedback at 40KHz sampling and 20Mbps of telemetry bandwidth. The controller allows multiple voltage domains as well. power, temperature, and application demands will determine the frequency the GPU is running at.

AMD has set the default temperature of these GPUs to run at a max of 95c. AMD states that the thermal threshold for these GPUs is well above 95c.

The default fan speed to a cap of 40% under 'quite' mode. The default fan speed to a cap of 55% under 'uber' mode. You can manually set the fan to a higher cap, up to 100%. The fan is dynamic and automatically adjusts with controller. Core clock speeds will not auto boost above set Core but may dynamically lower itself if temps rise above 95c. Higher fan caps can alleviate higher temps and keep Core clock from dynamically being lowered.

Powerplay & AMD Zerocore Technology

AMD PowerPlay power management technology automatically manages power consumption according to actual GPU loading. AMD ZeroCore Power technology enables lower idle power than any other currently available graphics card. Where are CrossFire connectors?

The missing crossfire finger technology is called Sideport. This technology support the crossfire connection through the PCI-E Express rather than separate connectors. What does this mean? Goodbye Crossfire Bridge connectors.

AMD has added a hardware DMA engine (Direct Memory Access) in the AMD CrossFire compositing block. The video cards now have dual DMA engines. This new technology is only present in the R9 290X and R9 290. CrossFire has been simplified in the new series, and as such AMD was able to get frame pacing working.

DMA engines allow for direct access between the GPUs over the PCI-Express bus solely. AMD has said the video cards can saturate a PCIe 3.0 x16 bus bandwidth; 16GB/s bi-directional. There is no performance penalty for eliminating the external bridge. Sideport can improve scaling and efficiency between the GPUs, especially as you scale up to triple or quad cards.

AMD OverDrive now allows you to customize the power limit and temperature which in turn effects thresholds.


Dual BIOS

The AMD Radeon R9-290X comes flashed with two separate BIOS for testing. The bios can be toggled by the small black switch located on the top of the part closest to the mounting bracket that you plug your displays into. You must reboot after toggling the switch for changes to take effect.

Quiet Mode - Switch is in position closest to where you plug in your displays. Fan is at 40% cap.

Uber Mode - Switch is in position furthest away to where you plug in your displays. Fan is at 55% cap.

I got paid last night, so my budget can easily handle cross-fire 290x's. Depending on the price I might grab a second one from Newegg, but for now it's just the one from ShopBLT.

I'll probably just redo the thermal paste as I will be sitting on the stock cooler for a while since it's starting to get cold down here anyway.

Update:
I actually have had the card since Tuesday but having too much fun to post an update here. I got some time now so here goes.






Still using the stock cooler but I redid the TIM, around 2C lower under load but the fan has never went above 70% in anything. Not planning on doing water for this build, maybe on my next build. Runs great and I love the fact that I can get 4XSSAA in BF4 and stay above 50FPS at 1080p Ultra, the game looks so crispy!

Yes NDA is being officially lifted tomorrow on 290X with official NDA lift on 290 on Oct 31, 2013 and it's official.

Since the pre-order release was cancelled from originaly Oct 3, 2013 we had the Pre-order thread that had 80+ pages of speculation we've started the club fresh by members request.
