Sapphire Tri-X seems to be the best cooler and I think I'd prefer that over the MSI FOR $30 more. But $70 more gets me to an Asus 290x; wonder if that's worth it. Plus Asus and Msi cards would ship sooner. I'm hearing Amazon is expecting up to 3 months before they ship out Sapphire 290s.
Is this reference under water or the custom DD? Has to be water right?

The DD's aren't that cool,

mine idle around 36 and 33c and they have hit 90c on the core and 85c on the vrms whilst benching at 1200/1350 with +100mV in 35c ambients devil.gif

They are a good cooler though, alot better than i thought they were going to be.

I really want the XFX dd cards for aesthetics. IMHO the best looking video cards ever made. But I want to crossfire in an air cooled case and I don't think the vrm cooling is good enough on these.

On mine I have a small section at the top of the screen that does respond. So if I put AB up at the top of the screen where I can click the "reset" button then the screen will return to normal.

The other thing I've noticed is that if the core is under load it is more resistant to doing this. So if I put the card under load first, and then decrease voltage (such as starting the miner), then it will hold the OC with lower voltage. But as soon as I stop the miner, the fragmented screen starts up again. But basically, as long as I leave 50mv of extra voltage when OCing to 1500 on the ram it won't do this. So it must be a voltage and OC issue.

I saw one thread where it explained that these cards go straight from 300mhz to their max whether 1500mhz or whatever on the memory. So when its set higher than stock (1250mhz) it causes the crashing or artifacts. It takes extra voltage to keep this from happening.

What we need is for someone to develop a bios that has more than two steps. Like it ramps up progressively to reach maximum frequency.

Yes I mentioned that the reason you get those lines (or black screens) is when the memory jumps from 150 MHz to full speed at IDLE core voltage (OR when the memory is locked at full speed (you can do this by disabling powerplay in afterburner's unofficial overclocking mode), while the core is running at idle voltage (0.9xx) , because the core also controls the IMC, and the IMC's voltage is too low to handle those memory clocks; its NOT unstable memory that's causing it. If it was, the screen would not 'fix' itself instantly when the core voltage is raised or when you press reset.

You can also increase your memory overclocks to where they "should" be, by disabling powerplay which forces the core to run at full 3D volts at idle (1.19x-1.2x) in 2D--that will always stop any blackscreens, then you should be able to push your memory to 1600 MHz and higher.

Depends on what temps you have in mind and what ambients/clock/volts etc you would be running.

I run a 1000/1250 overclock (more than enough for me) and they sit around 60c or so in BF4, vrms are 60ish again.

And yes, they look great, best looking cards on the market atm imo.

Just an aside but I was really shocked with this Diamond card. Considering I am apparently according to this list, the only person on this board with one, I'd like to share something.

Before I put her under water I played some games and ran a few benches. Even with a reference cooler it didn't go above 80C, which was quite shocking. Hell the fan didn't even throttle.

Zero coil whine as well.

Anyway she's under water now and peaking at about 42C under full load. That being said I need some advice, what bios should I use to unlock voltage and start my magical, mystical journey to 1300Mhz?

Been awhile since I had an AMD card so I'm curious.

hi guys, i'm about to buy a Sapphire 290X Tri-X but i want to put a EK backplate on it (EK-FC R9-290(X)). do you think this is possible? Just to make it clear: i want to leave the Tri-X cooler on and put the Backplate on with it.

On the OP in the water block section I made sure to add (Not a stand alone) meaning it needs the full block. It won't work.

Please note:
- The backplate does not serve as a standalone unit!

Too bad because EK would have sold a lot of those!

aww damn, that's a shame. thanks for the info.

I had success with this but started to get BSODs during idle (web browsing etc.) - probably cos 2D voltages was too low for my Powercolor 290. Mb you will have more luck with your card.
Have you ask XFX support about UEFI bios?

2 All
UEFI mb is not a big deal but all my stuff support Fast boot why I have to hold back just cos my videocard vendor not bothered with creating compatible BIOS?

Thnx I will try that one in the near future when I get a new mobo.
I didn't contact XFX support about UEFI bios.
Yeah I also want to use ultra fast boot in the upcoming weeks that's why I am also searching for a UEFI bios, post in this thread when you found a good one, ty

All the BIOSes should allow voltage control through Afterburner (+100mV) or Trixx (+200mV), or you can flash an Asus BIOS and use GPU Tweak. If you are feeling adventurous you can put the PT1 BIOS on and use that for even more voltage/LLC control.
