Hey all picked up a Asus R9 290 Reference at Microcenter today for 460$ as I was able to get a 280x but since im on 1440p and planned on adding another at some point I figured the 512 bit and 4gb was the way to go for the extra coin....anyways did I get a descent buy at 460?? I see newegg is at like 530

Also I don't plan on running it overclocked much since I mostly play mmo;s etc...I can downvolt it on stock to 1.16v

I also tried maxing the card out lol several time at 1.4v? was this safe??? I here they vdroop pretty good also I managed to keep temps below 85c and vrm's never go past 69c
max I could get was 1145/1600 so its not the best overclcoker lol asic score was 81%

the fan noise doesn't bother me as I keep it mostly below 40% and it doesn't break 85c 1.25v max was 89c at 1.4v

Can't tell if serious or not...

If so, 1300 MHz is really uncommon, especially so for reference. I've not even heard of any Hawaii chips doing over 1350 without extreme cooling solutions.

Most Hawaii chips, in my experience, will do 1150-1250 MHz on either water or air.

Are you sure? I am only saying that if 290x lightning can do only 1300-1400 then its kinda low because EXPERIENCE ocers already hit 1350-1370 with ref pcb. And this is with water

But where is your PSU? So confused. Sick looking rig, the case looks massive though.

I didn't follow what was going on at first lol. Had to read it a few times.

About the only sense I made out of it was to ignore whomever that was on reddit. Your psu is perfectly suited to your build imo and with a lil bit of room to spare. Ya don't want to run psus near their limits 24/7, it makes for short lived psus.

Will my PSU be able to handle a single r9-290x? I know it isn't the best but I wanted to know if its good enough for a i7-4770k at 4.4 ghz and a OC r9-290x.
Hey all. I'm really close to pulling the trigger on a dual CF setup. Will my AX860 PSU work well for 2 x R9 290's + i5 4670K with mild OC? I don't want a "sufficient" PSU that I always have to worry if I'm pulling too many W. I'd rather trade up now and have peace of mind.

Next question, of course, is what do I get if the AX860 will be too close for comfort with the setup above?

Thanks.

That is what I said to myself. Maybe they doing it wrong. wink.gif

With the stock cooler, I max at 53 - 54C on VRM1. With water block + EK thermal pad, it go up to 64C. Definitely the VRM1 not cooling very well when using EK thermal pad.

Can you share your max temp (VRM1) when gaming or benching (e.g. Valley) or mining? The Phobya is available locally here. If it cool well, I'm thinking getting one. The EK thermal pad is rated 3 - 5 W/mK.

The only real worry for me is the VRM1 on the first card if its hitting over 100 degrees just in a benchmark after a long gaming session that's gonna get much worse. 70 on the 2nd is much more reasonable for me.
I may try putting thermal paste on the pads as well when I get round to it, that may be accounting for some of the heat.

Score from 1200/1625 not sure if this is normal for 2 R9 290s at 1440p
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Even 70 is too high with water cooling. They should be in 40s range. You probably mistakenly using thinner thermal pad, that's why you're seeing 100C. If Phobya 7W/mK thermal pad can cool better, get that one.
