http://www.hardocp.com/article/2014/01/26/xfx_r9_290x_double_dissipation_edition_crossfire_review/10

If you look at their system load for crossfire 290x its about 707 W full load....on HardOCP.

I was getting full load on all three cards, not two...fairly confident about this with crysis 3 and bf3 - reviews show good scaling with trifire and even quadfire + MSI afterburner was showing all 3 GPUs at 100%. To add to this, mining pegs my gpus at 100%...hash rate consistent with 3 x 290s...about 820 per card...total 2460 khash.

As for my theory that my lower power consumption is due to water being a lot more power efficient for R9 290s...I would point to this review..and there was another one that also had similar results but I cant find it.

http://www.legitreviews.com/nzxt-kraken-g10-gpu-water-cooler-review-on-an-amd-radeon-r9-290x_130344/5

Total system power consumption went down from 512W -> 468W from air to G10 kraken. That would be an impressive 8-9% decrease in TOTAL SYSTEM LOAD, but if you factor in the fact that only the GPU cooling was changed and assuming worst case scenerio where the R9 290x is drawing about 300W, we are then looking at the G10 kraken r9 290x drawing 256 W, making change from stock to G10 kraken cooling reducing the power consumption of the R9 290x by about 15% biggrin.gif

Games don't load both cpu and gpu at the same levels nor at the same times. [H]'s numbers are from gaming. My number is from benching. The difference between our numbers is understandable given the differences in testing content. What I don't get is how low your numbers are, makes no sense to me. Btw, it should be said that GPU load does not = output. ALSO, the kraken review is stupid. They removed the gpu cooler and slapped on the kraken but neglected to account for the "cost" of powering the kraken given their power consumption test. It is an error lol in testing. The kraken cooled gpu gets a free pass on cooling where the ref card's cooling is counted in its consumption numbers.

Yes you are benching different and we cant compare and yes 100% load on games vs furmark are different, but my results I am pretty damn confident about smile.gif I don't like to spread misinformation but the numbers add up IF you believe that a better cooler for the VRMs and GPU reduces GPU draw. Also my numbers I think are more typical for an average user, not someone throwing 1.4V into three cards which would of course draw tremendous power.

The beastly of it probably made them think it was some highly advanced bomb.

Hah! That's funny.

Hopefully they'll get through customs before scrypt ASICs come out. If it doesn't, I'll be pissed.

Got an MSI R9 290 Gaming Twin Frozr today, loving it so far

Seems max OC it like is 1100/1350

Trying for 1150 gave artifacts right up to +75mV

1450 vRAM blackscreened

Temps haven't gone over 72c yet even after a couple hours of benching and gaming

Even with the flawed test, how much power does a 12v 92mm fan take? 5w at most? http://www.nzxt.com/product/detail/138-kraken-g10-gpu-bracket.html claims 2.6W, or 12V * 0.18A.

At 300W thats ~0.9%, thats not even statistically significant. Practically, at $0.1kwh - thats $0.19 per month - so pretty much free. Stock fan probably takes up even less power. Both would be negligible for most intents and purposes.

Maybe - since its being cooled more effectively, it should be more electrically efficient - meaning it requires less power to operate at the same speed - probably save more power than the fan takes to operate.

I notice that when my VRM temps go up, my PC power usage goes up also.

For example, when I just start a bench at 1100/5500 pm +18mV, I pull about 410w from the wall (specs in sig, I also have one monitor plugged into my UPS) but after my card warms up it goes up to about 430w.

At +168mV I pass 500w when the card is hot. This is with an 80+ bronze PSU, a 3770k @ 1.3v also.

If the card is constantly cooler I suspect it'd pull less power. I can test this when I get my rig re-built (hopefully this weekend, depending on how much homework I get).

Hey I found this on legit news about the new Beta for AMD 13.35..here's the link: http://www.legitreviews.com/amd-catalyst-13-35-beta-driver-leaked-mantle-trueaudio-support_134753
I don't have an AMD GPU yet But thinking of upgrading. Hope this help you guys get a good look on what this new driver can do. thumb.gif

i wish i could find that second review that also noticed lower temps = less power draw...oh well. I would believe OCN testing from multiple sources more anyway thumb.gif

Yesterday's news, and those drivers do not contain mantle sorry. I don't mean that in a bad way, but was just clarifying that those drivers leaked yesterday and by today it's already been noted that they go not contain mantle.

wait a second i think im stupido...hahaha. Its total system draw the legit review was measuring which of course would include the Kraken G10 somewhere in there..unless they ran it off a separate outlet or something (extremely unlikely)....sooo the - 44W system draw would actually be the difference between Stock temp GPU/VRM vs G10 GPU/VRM....unless of course the G10 cooler is 44W more power efficient than the stock cooler tongue.gif
