Anybody know how well a h55 would cool a r9-290x overclocked with a g10? Or do I need a stronger cooler?

No it wont'. You can change your existing Win8 over to the new build. Takes like 5 minutes to enable it using the phone option in the control panel under "system". I've done it a hundred times.

My existing copy of Windows 8 is still gonna be used by my current PC. I'm effectively fixing a PC with Vista OEM on it, which is tied to the old mobo, which means I need a new OS.

I use the pick up at depot option for expensive items.  They are always open past 5pm normally, around i think 7pm.  I log into UPS and change the delivery option.  I do hate that you got to wait till Monday.

Still waiting on 290x lightning... ASUS DC2 is looking nice though.  Get off your butts MSI and do something!@

It should do fine. My h80 is overkill for sure.

I want to replace the thermal pads on my stock 290x cooler. What thickness should I use? Some say 0.5mm on the vram and 1mm for the vrms, is that ok? Or can I use 1mm everywhere (save some money)? Also what are the dimensions a memory chip? THANKS! thumb.gif

The worry with using 1mm on the VRAM would be it being thick enough to keep the rest of the heatsink from making good contact. I'm not sure how likely that is, but if you are going to the trouble to change it you may as well put the right ones on.

Yeah I want to do it right once and for all. I plan on keeping this card for a while so yea... EK website says 0.5mm for vram and 1mm for vrms, I don't know if this applies to stock cooler tho. What I fear with not thick enough pads is that contact is not good enough, thicker ones can get squeezed so it's not so bad. The best would be to measure them but I'm way too lazy lol

Thanx for replying guys. Yeah, i tried switching the bios. I figured it was RMA time, just thought it would be worth posting in here to see if i was missing something.
It's good idea to get second opinion. I figured you didn't missed anything after reading your posts.

Refernce R9 290x Card temps running for 2 hours:
Core: 93'C
Core: 840-940mhz
Vrams 1= 77'C 2=88'C
Sound Level: 47Dba (Have a sound sensor)

Sapphire R9 290 temps after running for 2 hours:
Core: 74'C
Core: 1000mhz STABLE
Vrams 1= 63'C 2=77'C
Sound Level: 37Dba

Performance difference? 1 fps.
Price Difference = Over 120$
Mostly because the Tri-X is meant to overclock and be stable while the reference can't reliably maintain its core clock. There really isn't any performance difference until you overclock, but most of the benefit of this card isn't a performance increase, it's lower temps + noise.
Either at stock or overclocked, my reference 290's can maintain at max clock in both games & benching.

It sound like CPU is bottlenecking. Did you checked CPU usage? If CPU usage is 100%, GPU usage drop & followed by sudden FPS drop, that show CPU is bottlenecking.

I just used the ones that came with the EK block (1mm), I also used the TIM on top of the pads, had just enough to cover GPU.

At 1200/1450 +100mv core max was 52c VRM1 42c VRM 48c
I just noticed you run Firestrike Extreme at stock clock. Nice temp anyway.

I have double-stacked thermal pad on VRM1, making it total of 2mm thick. I'm using EK waterblock anyway but even with double thickness it doesn't prevent the block from making good contact with GPU core & VRAM because the thermal pad will squeezed when you fasten the screws (not over tighten of course). In my case 1.5mm should be perfect thickness for VRM1. I personally don't recommend 2mm or double thickness thermal pad on VRM1. I only do that because I don't have extra 0.5mm pad.

I don't know the correct thickness for stock cooling but 0.5 & 1mm for VRAM & VRM's respectively would be my best guess too.

Yeah, I don't know how squishy the pads you want to buy are. The stock ones are pretty soft, but the ones that came with the EK waterblock are stiffer. Not sure about the Fujipoly or others though.

hello kizwan.. I am monitoring the cpu usage with msi afterburner ... cpu usage is at 60% .. 80% .. 88% .. never 100% ... even in stuttering .. yesterday did some testing .. happens only with battlefield 4 ..
In other games works perfect...gpu usage is at 100% .. in metro 2033 .. crysis 2 ... crysis 3 .. medal of honor warfighter ...
