Dual 290s is cool if you have a use for them. One of these cards is overkill for 1080 gaming, great for 1440 or 1600, and likely sufficient for 5760x1080 surround.

Also have to consider powering two of these beasts, as well as keeping two of them cool. Xfire without watercooling will likely 'cook' the top card.

Thanks for that info! Yeah, I figured something like that was in play... However, is there a benefit to buying the 290x, if I already have (2) 290x on the way? Or would the 290 running as a 290x work just as well as the legit 290x's?

As for the PSU, I have a Seasonic 1000w Platinum on the way...

I'm going for 1440p, wondering if I should take a crack at 1600p - didn't really think about that.. I'm hoping for ultra settings in BF4, on one of those 'korean special' monitors....

EDIT: How can I get proof that it is indeed unlocked? Couldn't the guy just rip any old screenshot off the web?

You can compare voltages in GPU-Z to see how the Offset voltage in Trixx applies compared to AB.

My +125mV I listed is Offset in Trixx.

So I just look at vdcc in gpu z to see the effect that trixx offset has? I'm not sure how this differs from straight up +mV, will have to do research. Thanks for the tip. So you're not adjusting mem voltage at all? And still hitting those clocks? Magic memory modules, holy smokes.

I don't know that a single 290 is great for 1440p. That's the screen I have and I have to tone down a lot of settings. I find that I don't need much AA at that res so it's not too bad. But I really feel like I want crossfire 290 for 1440p.

I hope you're wrong about xfire on air, cos I plan on it, I have a 290 Tri-X on preorder to mate with this PCS+. I know it's an issue and that's why I waited and did research to get the best cooler. I think I picked the two cards that are neck and neck for the title. I know for sure the MSI Gaming 290 I couldn't xfire, a friend had that setup and gpu1 heat throttles in the same case I have, albeit with weaker case cooling.

If the 290 truly unlocks then it will work just like a 290X. There were a few people that received the unlockable cards, whom verified by a # stamped on the cards, that the manufacturers were simply flashing the 290X to a 290. When these cards first released sales on 290X were slow because of the $150 difference in price to the 290. Companies were flashing 290Xs simply to move their stock.

I don't think you'll have any issues with Ultra Settings in BF4 with 2 of these monstrosities. Not sure how forgiving BF4 has been with Xfire though, I know it has been kind of sketchy in numerous regards since it launched. Take a look into the Hawaiian Heat Wave build log. Super in depth, tons of useful information for Xfire 290(X) system. Gunderman456 is one thorough SOB!

For voltage see where your VDDC is at stock, 100mV with AB, then compare when you adjust voltage with offset in Trixx. Then you know how far to push in TrixxiIf you don't want to exceed the voltage that AB applied.

For 1440p I was just going off memory of reading numerous reviews of these cards. In many games at 2560*1600 with some AA they were keeping at least 30 in the most demanding games if not low-mid 40s for most others, and that was at stock clocks. Give it some OC and the frame rates should be far from choppy. Although if you're talking about a 120/144Hz monitor, or never dipping under 60fps then a second card would be necessary.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Sapphire/R9_290X_Tri-X_OC/9.html

Xfire temps will depend on two things...Space between the cards, and if you have sufficient airflow getting to the cards.

You can always go the route of strapping an AIO onto the GPUs if you have room for a couple 120mm rads biggrin.gif

As long as your case has good airflow and you don't mind using a custom fan profile you can cfx on air no problem. It will be loud though.

For reference on my pc with reference coolers, after an hour of:
  • BF4 my temps will range from 67C/57% fan speed on the coolest card with 74C/64% fan speed on the hottest.
  • Crysis 3 my temps will be 79C/69% fan speed on the coolest with 87C/88% fan speed on the hottest-this was after like 3 hours though.

Crysis 3 xfire usage is crazy good with the 3 gpu's essentially pegged at 100% the whole time. BF4 I limite frames to 105 fps so they dont get as much of a workout and since my monitor is 100hz

Also have to consider powering two of these beasts, as well as keeping two of them cool. Xfire without watercooling will likely 'cook' the top card.

single 290 is not great for 1600p. I can confirm you that. I need to tone down settings if I want more than 50 fps. 50 fps is playable but dont like it. 2 is good. Ultra settings, no AA. 3 x 290, ultra 4x MSAA, 200% res scale, never go down less 60 fps. But man, these things are loud. But my AP182 fan is even more louder though and I dont mind. My wife dont like it though. Have to close room to play smile.gif

oh one more thing, 3 x 290 is not so loud as people think. I would say 2 x 290 and 3x 290 is almost noise comparable.

oh one more thing, the fps i mentioned in playing BF4, everything is at stock. CPU and GPU.overclocked 4770k can really drive with 4 x 290's. with 3 x 290's, stock 4770k can cope up. No bottlenecking observed.

Just to make sure my eyes working properly. Fujipoly 11W/mK is $7.49 while Fujipoly 17W/mK is $25.99 at FrozenCPU. Why huge difference? Is this always like this? If I go with 11W/mK, do I still get huge improvement in VRM1 temp?
