Thanks Arizonian. I will post a validation along with a pic of the 4 cards one I have them all together. smile.gif

Here are my findings on these cryovenoms so far. I'm only able to get 1127 on the core and 1480 on the memory. Considering they advertise these cards as capable of 1175. 1128mhz on the core and any amount of additional voltage produces artifacts in 3dmark, that's a little disappointing.

I'm not sure what to make of these EK waterblocks. Core temp tops out at 45c during heavy benchmarking and in the high 30's gaming. What really bothers me are the vrm temps. Vrm 1 can get up to 82c in benches, while vrm 2 stays around 40c. Can anyone with an EK block chime in please? Is this normal? This is all with an ambient temp of 21c.

Edit - also, forgot to mention. Both cards so far have Hynix memory and are locked.

No, during extended gaming sessions at sustained 100% load at 1205/1437 with +168mV I get max of 51c core and VRM1.

I also have FujiPoly Ultra Extreme pads, but 80c is too high.

Thanks for a quick reply! I wonder then if it's a case of substandard thermal material from the factory, like always.

I'm using the stock pads and I get VRM1 temps around 60C under a full load (BF4, Valley, etc). My core is low to mid-50s at the same time, so I'd say something is off with yours. You used the 1mm pads on the VRMs?

Highest VRM1 temps I usually get in Valley. Highest VRM1 temp I have recorded was 81C @ 1315/1675 +200mV offset during a FFXIV bench; before swapping pads.

What's the warranty policy for those cards, can you remove the block?  If so you should consider changing those thermal pads for VRM1 at least.  I observed 23% temp drop and now getting same temps as chiknnwatrmln.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1468593/r9-290-x-thermal-pad-upgrade-vrm-temperatures

Since you're getting 4 cards you'd need to order 2 of these:

I have a E3-1230V3 + 290X @ 1093/1325 not overvolted paired up with a SuperFlower GG 450W PSU, it's enough. No hard lockups or so. Even at full load, the PSU is quiet. Prolly draws ~380W

Since you mentioned heavy benching, 80s Celsius for VRM1 is pretty normal with EK water block & stock EK thermal pad. Mine managed to go up to 82C when benching at 1200/1600 +200mV (max at 1.422V, average 1.344 - 1.359V) in 32C ambient (indoor).

Substandard? No. I use EK water block with stock EK thermal pad before on previous gen AMD card. It keep VRMs running cool without too much hassle. The reason is because 290's VRM1 is running hot, that's why.

yea, the shear size of these chips makes them pull a crapload of power on even small overclocks, but on stock they are pretty efficient, especially under water, my (reference) 290X on stock I'm yet to see pull any more then 200W, though I only have a 1050p screen atm so its not really being used to its potential yet...
