I've been using the 13.12 for pretty much the whole time i was trying to fix the black screen issue. That 14.1 install was just a last ditch attempt to not have to rma :p

Lol, when my first 290x was DOA i went and bought an R5 230 (i think it was that) for $60 from Best Buy, just to make sure it wasn't my mobo/cpu/socket. When my Elpida card came back from Newegg i returned the R5 for a Samsung EVO

I'm planning a triple 290x build, so i'm gonna need to order more eventually. Gonna try to find a decent price on an XFX or Powercolor while this card's going through RMA process.

Thanx for the help (and kicks in the a## to get this rma started :D )

I'll definitely keep you guys posted :thumb:

Look on the bright-ish side, at least you get another shot at a good overclocker...and maybe the RMA will get you a good one in return as well

Yeah i'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed for some Hynix cards. Still can't believe nobody's released a Hynix-ONLY version!!!

I'm just worried about the random-ish nature of Black Screens & hoping Powercolor honors the replacement. I'm gonne be HEATED if they keep my card tied up for a month and then send it back to me because there's "No Problems Found"

Edit: Anybody know the MSI policy on tampering with the cooler or adding waterblocks? Do they have tamper seals on the twin frozr 290x? Also, they're reference PCB correct?

Guys... How can I fix my overclocks constantly being reset after a reboot...

Using MSI AB B18 or TriXX latest doesn't matter. All 14.x drivers have it.

Thanks for the reply, below is my answer.

I didn't see that video display the FPS performance, unless I missed it.  What exactly do you mean by 'dipping' into the 40s?  What FPS do you see most often?  You can try running Fraps while you play for an hour or so to get an accurate measurement of FPS over that time frame. It's plausible the frame rates could drop and recover at certain points in the game.

The FPS is listed in the description. This is just an example, I've heard other users mention similar results.

  • what clocks/voltages do you have for CPU, RAM and GPU?
  • Your monitor is 1440p, I would assume you are running at that resolution?
    • Looks like that monitor's refresh rate can be overclocked quite successfully, are you higher than 60Hz refresh rate?
  • I see you have AE III on your card, are your temperatures in check for core and VRM1? Stability and other issues can arise when VRM1 crosses the ~90C mark

CPU - OCd to 4.4ghz, I'll take a look at the details once I'm back from work.
RAM - left as is
GPU - left as is with +50% power

- 1440p, stock refresh rate 60hz

- temps are:
60 for GPU
77 for VRM1
55 for VRM2

But my results were the same with stock cooler at 60% speed (all temps under 80 with that)

  • When was the last time you did a fresh Windows install?  I know it has helped me before to get correct performance from hardware, and it seems to be a popular fix in this thread in particular.
  • What driver version are you running? 14.1 has been horrible for doing just about anything; 13.11 or 13.12 are the way to go presently. 14.2 is coming out today I believe, that may be better, don't know yet.
  • What GPU did you have prior to the 290, Nvidia or AMD?
  • Are your motherboard chipset drivers up to date? Is there a new BIOS for your board that could help?
  • If you're OCing the GPU which utility, and version of that utility, are you running?

- I did a fresh windows install when I got the SSD, which was at the beginning of December.
- I'm using 14.1, but the test was also ran with the 13.12. I've only installed 14.1 recently.
- I didn't have any GPU prior to that (unless you count the integrated Intel HD one which I used before the R9 290)
- I'll have a look at the motherboard chipset drivers, haven't updated those. Might be the culprit here.
- I'm not ocing the GPU, I only raised power limit yesterday to 50% to see if it would help, it didnt..

My rig is in the sig.

What am I doing wrong?

Dipping to 40s in gameplay or in the bench? And who's averaging 80?! With what settings? Here's how my 290 looks:

Tressfx is on so that's pretty good imho. You should definitely not be getting 40 min in the bench if Tressfx is off.

My settings are different from yours, I had all the settings maxed out and tressFX off. I'll be doing more testing today in a couple of hours.

EDIT: Oh yeah, im running the benchmark, havent played the game yet.
