Remove the rear IO plate, makes a huge difference. It restricts the airflow and adds a lot of noise from turbulent air trying to escape from through the small vents. 55% doesn't bother me at all now, and it sure did with the IO plate on it.

Just google for a article on how to do it, Semiaccurate did one on just that but their rusults were BS if you ask me, since I did it and it was a big difference in noise.

Preliminary 290 crossfire temp test using Metro LL bench looped 50x on max settings. Clocked at 1080 core, 1350 mem, 0 vddc offset.

Gpu1: Sapphire 290 Tri-X OC

Gpu2: Powercolor PCS+ 290

Sapphire 290 -- 72c core, 71c vrm1, 56c vrm2
Powercolor 290 -- 61c core, 61c vrm1, 48c vrm2

I can live with those temps biggrin.gif That's better than I expected from my silenced Define R4 case which doesn't have stellar airflow to begin with and I'm using Noctua fans set to max at 1000rpms. But boy does 290 crossfire pump out the heat. The area around my desk is noticeably warmer. That's crazy. My pc case is literally a space heater now. Cpu temps are wrecked, high 50s low 60s, 5-10c higher than before.

Gpu usage is still all over the place though, what is this about? Max gpu load on gpu1 was only 88%. Cpu usage was 91%.

I'm not so much interested in maxing out scores (one 290 was enough for me frankly, this setup is waaaaay overkill lol), just in making sure things are as they should be. If other xfirers could share their Valley scores I would appreciate it. List your clocks obviously.

Do they both have same voltages applied for the clocks?

Here's an odd thing. I have Afterburner set to apply the same settings to both cards obviously. And vddc is set to 0. But the Powercolor, which comes with a +50 vddc in the bios, is still using the higher voltage. Sapphire gets 1.188v max, Powercolor gets 1.227 max. Shouldn't they be operating on the same voltage?

Have you tried with both GPUs in the top and bottom slot?  I've seen people mention swapping positions before.

Won't fit that way, Sapphire is 305mm and collides with the lower hdd cage.

Some paste like Arctic MX-4, Gelid GC Extreme, or Noctua NT-H1 would probably lower core temperatures.  If you'd like to go the route of best performance for TIM it would be CLP or CLU, Coolaborator Liquid Pro/Ultra. These you must be cautious when applying since it is liquid metal.  Best method seen here on this thread for application is using masking tap around the GPU core to make sure it doesn't get anywhere else.

VRM Thermal Pads and temperatures: http://www.overclock.net/t/1468593/r9-290-x-thermal-pad-upgrade-vrm-temperatures#post_21821258

Your best bet is likely aftermarket cooling unfortunately, but I'd be interested to know what would happen with good TIM on the core and a thermal pad upgrade for the VRM1 on a reference cooler could do.

the best aircooler out there is out of stock. the cheaper one , they still have it.

GPU usage is normal like that with 290's Crossfire. If games didn't stutter/lag then you don't need to worry.

Mine doesn't. Makes sense since both of my cards have different max VDDC. When applying offset voltage, both card will run at different voltage too.

14.2 work brilliantly on dx. Mantle didn't look visually as nice personally. Constant 100+ fps on xfire 290's max settings super sampling 115%. Happy.

Anyone with a Sapphire 290 Tri-X:

How do you tell which is the legacy bios and which is the uefi bios? Ever since I installed that card my bootup time has gone up by a good 20 seconds. So which switch position is what, and is there an alternative way to determine which BIOS you're on?

Crossfire not going so great for me right now lol, I had crazy fluctuations in Afterburner, someone told me I need to use Trixx because AB does not handle 290s well, well I installed Trixx and it contains no info, everything is a blank or a 0.

I worried this card might be flimsy due to the plastic in the shroud but it feels rock solid. If anything less flex in this card than on the all metal shroud/backplate Powercolor PCS+. Tri-X shroud is half metal as it turns out.

The VRM cooling looks much nicer on the PCS+? Any temps?

bottleneck, render thread and drivers don't have enough space to feed the GPUs fast enough, once mantle picks up you shouldn't have to worry about that much though.

side note, discovered that OpenGL rendering with excessive tessellation in wireframe mode can punch the card hard enough to make windows lag and your mouse almost unusable... :I
(though heaven etc have locked max values, so you cant accidentally do this on said benchmarks)

Ok this is freaking maddening. I thought I'd give 14.2 a try. Well now the fan rpm sensor on Gpu Z read like this:

HWInfo reads it fine though.

Meanwhile over in Trixx I cannot get Trixx to save a custom fan curve to both cards. I can set both to a fixed rpm. I can set both to auto. But if I want a custom curve, only one can have it. I'm bouncing back and forth between tabs trying to get the thing to save, it will not.

The gpu usage thing makes this crossfire unusable atm. I'll get hundreds and hundreds of frames for a while, and then it will plummet to like 20 fps for a few seconds as gpu usage drops to 2%. It's the mother of all macro stutters.

Oh why did I even try this. I was so happy with a single gpu. What a waste for $500 because right now, I think I'm just going to put this Tri X in the closet.

What should I do, just format my drive and start all over with a GPT convert? Because that's probably going to be a lot faster than trying to chase a possible driver glitch.
