Ok this is freaking maddening. I thought I'd give 14.2 a try. Well now the fan rpm sensor on Gpu Z read like this:

HWInfo reads it fine though.

Meanwhile over in Trixx I cannot get Trixx to save a custom fan curve to both cards. I can set both to a fixed rpm. I can set both to auto. But if I want a custom curve, only one can have it. I'm bouncing back and forth between tabs trying to get the thing to save, it will not.

The gpu usage thing makes this crossfire unusable atm. I'll get hundreds and hundreds of frames for a while, and then it will plummet to like 20 fps for a few seconds as gpu usage drops to 2%. It's the mother of all macro stutters.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Oh why did I even try this. I was so happy with a single gpu. What a waste for $500 because right now, I think I'm just going to put this Tri X in the closet.

What should I do, just format my drive and start all over with a GPT convert? Because that's probably going to be a lot faster than trying to chase a possible driver glitch.
Like Paul said, your CPU is bottlenecking. Did you overclocked your 4670k?

Yeah it's a 4670k at 4.7. I guess I deserve some bottlenecking for pairing a $200 cpu with $1000 worth of gpu. But total cpu usage isn't anywhere near 100%, peaked for a second at 91% in Metro LL but other than that it's 50-70%. But I suppose bottlenecking can occur without total cpu usage hitting 100%.

I freaked for no reason lol crossfire is sort of working now biggrin.gif Trixx was a problem, that gave me huge janky stutters in addition to all sorts of glitches, including the first ever black screen I've gotten with a 290. With AB I don't get that. I don't understand why. The only problem that's really irritating me right now is that the fan rpm sensors on Gpu Z don't work. But then I've always had this totally irrational completely unfounded suspicion that Gpu Z causes all sorts of glitches so it's not a huge loss. HWInfo is superior anyway.

Anyway, 290 crossfire is overkill for me so I'm running 1000 core 1300 mem and leaving fans at 50%, still get more fps than my display can show at 60hz. Really wish you could undervolt 290s. Because it's silly to be getting 150fps in games with all the settings I want. Although -- I still can't max Tomb Raider or Metro LL. But I don't want some of those settings anyway, stuff like SSAO and DOF don't always add to the experience, sometimes they look awful.

In any event -- now that I've determined I do not need a new psu (absolute peak with a slight vddc adjust was 647w) or new fans or a new case (temps are good, everything low 70s or below), I guess I'll get a new cpu. I take it 4770k is not enough to avoid bottleneck? Do I need a 4930 or whatever it is in the range I never usually even look at?

You'll only gain a handful of fps even if you went 4930k. As for the usage spike, It's ab that finicky. It doesn't seem to work well with hawaii atm. The GPU-Z rpm bug is common with 14.x drivers. I had it on 14.1 also.

@taem,

Glad to hear Crossfire now working well for you. I got problem with Trixx when using 14.1 beta driver though. Bottlenecking will happen if CPU usage 100% & GPU usage lower and this accompanied by sudden FPS drop. My 3820 can handle two 290's even at stock clock, so 4770k should be able too. Look like your 4670k can handle two 290's just fine. You don't need to upgrade yet.

In my test using BF4, going from 1080p 100% resolution scale to 200% resolution scale, the CPU usage is lowered roughly by 10% at least. I wonder whether going from 1080p to 2160p (or any resolution higher than 1080p) also yield the same result.

You missing the point here. We're not talking about fps gain but regarding CPU bottlenecking in Crossfire.

if its the ASUS DCII, they usually don't have VRM sensors, otherwise what card you got?

My VRM Sensors are either readable or not, like every other boot.

I have an Aida64 widget on my dekstop. When i boot my pc, it's like a 50/50 shot they'll either be there or not.

But then again, that card's on it's way back to Newegg right now. And i have the new one plus a 2nd coming next week. So we'll see what the future brings
