Haha, last time I rma'd a 7970 they even called me a week later to ask if everything was ok. Oh well, how did you pay so little for one from Dell?

BTW, that AX1200i most likely won't cut it for anything more then stock clocks. Here is some math:

4 x250watt (r9 290) = 1000watt leaving you with 200 watt for rest of the system, there is nothing wrong with running the AX1200 at near it's peak but peak nubmbers are not meant to be taken as rated sustained draw. You will A) kill the psu or B) it most likely will shut down due to over current protection
I concur, 4x would work on a 1200 assuming you don't overclock at all. I've seen 290s/290xs with power draws of over 300 during more extreme stress test benches, but not really during normal gaming use on stock clocks.

For me Crysis 3 wouldn't run period, nothing would load when I hit the play button. I had success with Skyrim once, but the second time it wouldn't load (It's equally likely that it was due to mods rather than 14.2). BF4 was just about the only thing I could play that I wanted to at the time, so I ended up rolling back to 13.2.

does anyone have experience with both Asus 290 DC2 and Sapphire 290 tri-x? Between those 2 which one run cooler and quieter? Can Asus be undervolted?

I can vouch for the tri-x, its extremely quiet. I came from a reference 7970. When I leave the PC on overnight, I do not hear it and its 5 feet away from my bed. When not gaming i leave both card at 35% fan speed. Even cranked up to 60% for gaming, its not noticeable, only if you really focus on it (if you are playing with not sound). I will never go back to reference cards after experiencing the tri-x.

Reference HD 7970 is louder then 290X so its not saying much.

Heres some clearer shots of my 4 slot beast.

You know what's actually a pretty good overclocking app? CCC. I'm liking this. Obviously I can't achieve high clocks without the vddc adjust but going to what the stock voltage allows is enough for me. I was getting severe clock and usage fluctuation in both AB and Trixx, do not get that with just CCC. At the same clocks, CCC is getting me better benches than either AB or Trixx. By a big margin -- like running Tomb Raider bench with AB gave me minimum 38fps, with CCC alone it became 58.

I have to disagree with keikei, I don't think the Tri-X is quiet. At 60%+, it's pretty noticeable. Temps are great though, I tried it as the upper card in air cooled xfire in a silenced mid tower, I expected temps in the high 70s, but I got gaming temps in the high 60s for core and vrm1 and high 50s for vrm2.

That's stellar imho, great cooling on this card. But again, only with fans cranked a fair amount (hit 71% here), and it's loudish that way. I would not get Asus for any of the R9 cards if you're air cooling, I don't think they did their cooling very well this round. You might get Asus if water cooling since their custom pcb has better power delivery.

Only thing I don't like about the Tri-X is there seems to be zero support for the pcb, and I hate sag.

If you have a reference board, you can flash ANY and I mean ANY bios that came from a reference card. Hope this helps.

It's precisely the stock +50mV on the Powercolor PCS+ I want to lose. I'd like the option of a very quiet profile with low clocks that runs at 40% fan, and then up the vddc and clocks and fans in a separate profile.

But, even with 13.12, I cannot undervolt the Powercolor PCS+, just keeps bouncing back to 0. (Which is still a vddc adjust of negative 50mV.) Tri-X would not undervolt on 14.2, dunno if it can undervolt on 13.12. Can anyone confirm?

So which bios should I flash to get undervolting? I need uefi support. Actually I suppose I could just flash the Tri-X bios and get a neutral vddc default.

Vortex240 pointed this the other day.

The ASUS DC2 has an issue where all of the heatpipes do not make contact with the die.  ASUS was lazy, atypical of them, and did not make a specific cooler for the 290, they used the 780 cooler.  Since the die on the 780 is so much larger, the heatpipes don't make proper contact with the Hawaii die.  Unless ASUS is, or are going to, fix the problem, you are likely better off with the Sapphire card.
