Coming here in hopes of some help with my "new to me" Sapphire R9 290. A friend bought the 290 from ebay and said he didn't really need because he was just trying to lowball the seller and actually won. I ended up trading my 7970 plus 2x 5870s for the 290. I installed it last night and instead of testing stock, started to OC it. Initial OC was 1100 core, 1350 mem. Ran Unique and my temps shot up to 95 degrees C. Idle was around 70 degrees. I did some fan tweaking and got it to come down to 91 degrees at around 55% fan speed. This seems extremely hot to me. So I dropped the OC and just ran stock. Same thing. Temps jumped up to 94 degrees and stayed there. My first thought is to remove the stock cooler and replace TIM and reapply the cooler. Anyone have any other suggestions? I honestly don't want to spend money on aftermarket cooling but will if it is absolutely necessary. Thank you in advance.

The CPU was the problem at a max of 87 degrees, but just sticking one of the 120mm slim fans blowing onto that brought it down to a maximum of 68, which is much better. How would I go about undervolting it? Would this bring the temps and power usage down very much? I have a bit of experience in overclocking CPU and GPU, thanks! wink.gif
+ rep!

undervolting usually does a great deal on power consumption and therefore heat output. i reduced my former hd 7950 by almost 20°C by undervolting it around 70mV (it still ran the stock clocks, good gpu sample)

I saw some old benchmarks for a 7680x1440 resolution 2-way R9 290X. (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-290x-hawaii-review,3650-27.html)

Does anyone know if adding a 3rd R9 290X to a 7680x1440 setup will make a massive difference? Or is there very little gain to be had from adding a 3rd R9 290X?

The stock coolers on these things are horrible. TIM might help, but not nearly as much as an Arctic Extreme III or something like that. At 100% fan, they sound like a 777 taking off, and it is not uncommon for them to run at such high temps.

I have something similar in my build, 2 r9-290x's 4 rads, so lots of fans, a 4770k running at 4.6 and of course all the other stuff and I power it all with my corsair AX1200 just fine.

Dang, I was hoping that someone would have a miracle fix instead of buying an aftermarket cooler wink.gif Thanks for the info. I know at 75% it was almost unbearable even with headphones on. The same buddy that bought the card is going to take off the cooler and apply the TIM. I will test that out for a day or two and if the temps don't drop much, then I guess I will go for the Arctic Extreme.

What temps are acceptable for long term gaming? I have been reading up on these cards this morning and I am seeing that 90s are somewhat common.

According to AMD they are designed to run at 95c all day long. That's why the fan profile doesn't ramp up that fast and tries to maintain a target temp of 95. Now with that said I personally am not comfortable with those temps and I went with water cooling.

Thanks Storm. I don't like it running at 95 either but I guess I will have to deal with it being around that temp for a while until I can get a different cooler.

90°C is somewhat the optimal condition amd aims for with these cards. wich makes no sense at all (other than cheaping out on the reference cooler) but whatever, new tim and pads will give you some improvement but you won't get silence out of this card. however, you could undervolt it a bit to see where it's going.

Hey i had a question ive had the 290x since it came out.. Just recently picked a second one up for crossfire. Ive done research saying fullscreen mode is the only way to use crossfire, which sucks I prefer windowed. Anyways in bf4 i used windowed mode, and when i checked hwinfo64 and/or afterburner I had both cards chuggling along together. From everything ive read crossfire wont work in windowed mode of any sort. I am using 14.2 drivers maybe thats it? Anyone else see this?
