Well, ASUS this was the last product I bought from your company!

Problem with black screen is it's an intermittent problem, that's the worst kind of problem to have. They're not going to sit there and test your card for hours on end, they're going to stick it in a test bench, boot, run a benchmark or two, fire up a game, and if during that half hour it doesn't black screen, you're going to get that card sent back to you.

Yeah, that's what i was afraid of with my card. I wasn't able to test & troubleshoot the black screens it til my NE 30day return window was over. I didn't have alot of confidence that Manufacturer RMA would find & fix the problem. Black screens are too random. I've had em 2hr's into AC Black Flag, and 2 minutes into staring at my Desktop. I've seen other people talk about the same thing happening with manufacturer rma's. Luckily, to my suprise, NE honored the replacement even though the 30days had passed. Much credit to them for taking care of that. I thought i was stuck with it!!!

Maybe my stock heatsink was just installed badly, because it ran super hot and would artifact easily. Prior to installing my water block, 1160mhz was the max I could get with +100mv (with the fan sounding like jet engine). Now I can get 1200mhz with the same voltage and the GPU never goes above 45c.

Thanks guys. From what I've read there isn't a much greater difference with the 290x lightning. OFC there isn't a waterblock available for it yet. This considered, would it be worth it to get 2 lightnings over 2 reference cards for watercooling?

I loved the AC Kryographics 290x Block since it was announced. Also not a particular fan of the metal plate on the EK 290x Blocks. That was my number one decider in going with reference.

If you like the EK Blocks for your particular GPU, then your usually safe getting a popular non-reference like the DCII, Matrix, or Lightning. They'll release a block for it eventually 99% of the time

I've only had two different 290s but what I've noticed is that the black screen issue comes in two levels. You either black screen randomly at stock (increasing vcore might resolve this) or black screen after running a substantial overclock on memory even after increasing vcore. Average memory overclock is around 1500mhz for elpida and 1650 for hynix.

On another note, I wonder why we don't get samsung memory in AMD cards? Apart from costs, I can't think of any other reason.

Lightnings will probably get you over 1200. They generally have top end components and power delivery as you know im sure. But when considering that slight extra bump you COULD have over reference, I don't think it is warranted. Especially considering you will have to have the lightning water blocks.

Its quite disappointing how unlocked 780/ti/titans can get 1300mhz+ with unlocked voltage and water
post #19218 of 43995

Yeah, the random stock black screens are the most frustrating thing to deal with. Increasing the power definitely helps stabilize the card (at least it did for me), but didn't get rid of the problem by any means. Still had 2-3 black screens a day at a minimum.

I wish we could get some 290x's with Samsung Ram!!!!

So an update to my problem...

I was still experiencing throttling down even though my VRM's were acceptable (around 77 C on BF4).

So what I did was, instead of having multiple programs running to watch my GPU - I turn them off one by one.

And I found that GPU-Z (0.7.7) be the cause of my throttling down.

I started with 13.2, stock GPU freq - GPU-Z, OpenHWMonitor and AB running.

It throttles down within 20+ mins of gameplay.

Repeat test and turned off GPU-Z, but kept AB and OHWMonitor.

No throttling.

Repeat test and turned off GPU-Z and AB but OHWMonitor... no throttling.

Repeat another test with OHWMonitor off but kept GPU-Z and AB... throttling happens.

Repeat another test with OHWMonitor and AB but left GPU-Z... for some reason it still throttles down.

Btw, I reboot in between tests.

So I just decided to turn off GPU-Z for the mean time and rely on OHWMonitor to monitor GPU although I cant see my VRM.

Yea considering the nature of Hawaii architecture it just seems like the 290x lightnings will shine under LN2 instead of water. Considering the objective, reference might just be the way to go. Guilty confession, I actually wanna use the EK csq block so I can use the plexi bridge to see the path of the coolant ph34r-smiley.gif
