Price cut it a must on these cards, I think a okay price for a 290 referense should be around 270 dollars and around 230 for elpidia. For the 290x, 300 for the reference and 250 for the elpidia mem. R9 cards are a beast yes, but the fact that they get so freaking hot even with non-reference cooler and can achieve questionable OC results, make them weaker than the 7970 for this generation. I think the 7970 did give better value for money than the 290/290x. A 290 is what, like 10-15% faster than a 7970Ghz? At this point, if you are going to WC your card ick the cheapest reference one with hynix memory and if you are running non.reference cooler take the tri-x, because these are the cheapest ones with hynix memory if im not wrong. Sorry, but neither 290 or 290x is worth 400 dollars, max 300 imo.

How do you figure that, if we do a video card comparison, the R9 290 is about as fast as the GTX 780 priced at 500 and the 290X is better than the 780 and titan which are priced at 500 and 1k respectively. Why would AMD charge any less for cards that perform as well as they do in comparison to the competition. They are already better price to performance, dropping the price to levels that low would in the end lose money to AMD. They can't just give video cards away...

Any card you spend only 300 dollars on, compare the benchmark scores from both companies to the 290 or 290X and see where they stand even from past years top cards versus 300 dollar cards.

Well, max 400 for a 290x as I said and which you agree with. But thats it. Cards are good, but not god like and certanly not worth the premium prices for 600-700 dollars.Like those overprices lightnings, rog, etc. I think we live in times where value of hardware dont really reflect the actually value, and you can relate to that since you are running a fx 9590 if you know what I mean....wink.gif

Lol you're delusional. $400 290 and $550 290X is perfectly reasonable. Yes, stock cooling is mediocre at best, but the cards are beasts and AMD deserves to make a good amount of $ on them. They can't just give them away you know. And Elpida is fine, it was just the first batch of cards with Elpida that had issues AFAIK. The Sapphire reference 290 I had was solid at 1450MHz memory and it had Elpida. 24/7 OC of 1175/1450 at +69mV.

The elpida vs Hynix thing is so overstated. For users who game on air, elpida is just fine, it all depends on the silicon lottery. My 7970 with Hynix could not overclock mem hardly at all, my current elpida 290 hits 1600 mem. This is only an issue for extreme overclockers IMHO.

And the 290 is a great card, I consider it a good purchase for $500. That extra horsepower makes all the difference for maxing out key settings while maintaining a constant 60fps at 1440p, which the 7970 cannot do. It's not just about raw horsepower but whether the extra muscle breaks a threshold.

you must have a bad clocker?

edit: my 290 is about 20 - 30% faster than my 7970.

200mhz over stock is now questionable ocing on a GPU...

Isn't the base clock around 800mhz on these chips? I'd say even the chips that don't overclock well are far better than what we had a few generations ago in terms of headroom.

I loved the card, it helds its own for a long time and is still more than enough for most games on a single 1080P screen. Now I own a R9 290X, im one of the lucky ones who actually purchased a R9 290 at release for $399.99 only to find out it could be flashed to a full fledged $550.00 R9 290X. wink.gif

Yes the card with stock cooling is very hot but I never leave my video cards with stock cooling either so I purchased and Accelero 3 cooler and now enjoy a 1200mhz core overclock and 1500mhz ram while never exceeding 64C load temps in spite of the overclock and overvolt to 1.328vc. As far as performance is concerned you are wrong, my HD R9 290X even at stock clocks walks my old overclocked HD 7970 and at 1200mhz core its not even close. I have gained as much as 20-30fps in some games which makes quiet a difference if you were previously struggling to maintain 30fps in certain gaming scenarios.

Oh yah, forgot to mention my card has elpida ram and no it doesnt suck. Some folks I think just got bad batches of it or something because mine has never given me any issues and clocks pretty decent. IMO the card is worth every bit of the $399.99 which I plaid for it, especially since it was a R9 290X in disguise which just needed to be unlocked.

Same here, my Elpida RAM is great. Doesn't overclock that madly but I can do 1400 without voltage adjustments smile.gif

Not really? It was back in the days of the 6xxx cards, but now with the newer 7xxx, r9 and r7 series it isn't.

Also the R9 290 comes stock at 947MHz, and the R9 290x is 1000MHz. We are talking about the boost though.

What is up with TriXX? I have a custom fan profile and when i restart my computer it goes back to 20% even though it is set to my fan profile. Never had this problem with AfterBurner..

Did you check the box in settings to save fan tweak to profile?

But in general Trixx keeps reverting to auto fan, it's a huge pain in crossfire. I usually have to save, load, save, repeat, multiple times before it will stick.
