Question that I'd like some opinions on.

If I wanted to run a crossfire or trifire setup, what do you think would give me the greatest performance

(mind you I own all of the hardware already)

3 x 290 same cards
2 x 290 same cards
1x 290x + 1x 290 mixed cards

I'm curious if the 290x+290 will cause issues from the cards capabilities being a bit off. Would this be a case where identical 290's would outperform a mixmatched 290+290x of different clocks?
I read much that tri-fire doesn't scale as well, however, it will still be an improvement over crossfire regardless of the situation it is put correct?

I don't know if I'm just going to buy some waterblocks and use a multiple card setup or do a single card setup. I'm sort of itchin to buy a msi 290x lightning, regardless all these 780ti's performing amazing on benchmarks/games frown.gif

So this is a little project I had over the weekend- using a closed loop watercooler (an Antec Kuhler 620 in this case) and using it to cool my r9 290...

took the whole day but I am pleased with the results-

idle: GPU@ 35C VRM1@26C VRM2@24C
Full Load: GPU@68C VRM1@42C VRM2@40C

Thanks for looking smile.gif

Looking really good! Awesome temps too for such a cheap mod!

Did you leave any metal off the actual heatsink in there, or just left it how it was in the pictures? I think adding some better cooling to the VRM's would improve it a bit. thumb.gif

Thanks,

i just used an old pentium 1 heatsink i had lying around and cut it in half and then stuck it on using themal tape. i have attached this to vrm2 and left vrm1 with the stock heatsink (the one that is under the stock fan)

seems to do the job quite well but got some coppers on the way and gonna get a backplate too smile.gif

how do you overclock crossfired cards? I currently have two R9 290s, going for 3 soon. But MSI Afterburner keepts setting my Core and Memory clocks down to zero when I hit apply profile.

The overclock that I"m trying to apply is:
1175/1350/+69mV/+30

that's the highest I could get on my single XFX card. Not sure about the 2nd and 3rd card. (but I figure I could use this as my base line)

GPUZ just says it detects two cards running in crossfire at 947/1250.

p.s how much would x4 gen 3.0 hurt my performance? Unfortunately, my motherboard only does 8/8/4 gen 3.

You quite certain that it only does that ? there would have to be a x16 slot somewhere being a ROG board and all that stuff........

Got a nice Heaven 4.0 score with my 290 Tri-X, way better than my old 7970:

http://s24.postimg.org/vkga45s0j/Heaven_4_0.jpg

However I had to push the vddc up to 156 (1.325v) and the pl to 50, as I can see you all manage to do similar oc with lower vddc, am I supposed to worry?
My asic quality is 81.5% thinking.gif
The temps seem fine, also no throttling with the catalyst 13.12 thumb.gif

I wonder if the memory speed will also pend on the vddc, maybe I should try with a lower memory to see if I could maintain the gpu oc with less voltage confused.gif

3 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or dual x8 or x8/x4/x4)

http://www.asus.com/ROG_ROG/MAXIMUS_V_FORMULA/specifications/

i was expecting x16/x16/x8 or something actually.

In Afterburner you have an option to sychronise settings for similar graphics processors, check that....if that doesn't work then you might need to re-install AB or get a newer version.

but x4 shouldn't really hurt the Bandwitdth that much on PCIe 3.0, same as a x8 PCIe 2.0 slot smile.gif

Upping the core voltage will help with Memory oc a bit. I'd drop it down to 1400 mem and try again, my 290's will do 1200 on the core at +110mV
