What would you guys say is a "Golden" 290? I'm doing 1200MHz at +56mv in Trixx, the RAM is terrible however.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Ummm, i'd say that's pretty good, i need +80mV for one card and +100mV for the other smile.gif

Hello, everyone.
I need you help.
I got my MSI R9 290X (Factory overclocked 1030MHz core 1250MHz memory) , a month ago. Last night I have noticed that my card throttles, even if it running pretty cool and overall performance is great.
I was using the latest catalyst beta 14.3. But some throttling is still present with 13.12 WHQL too.
Here is a MSI AB screenshot taken during Metro 2033 run

It does not throttle as much as 14.3 beta but still............

Nice overclock on the core! 1200 imo is safe to say you have a decent 290x. If you can maintain 1200 on the core and reach 1500+ on ram 1600+ if it's hynix by upping the mV to under 100 then it's a pretty good card. 1200/1550 on my elpida 290x with +87mV and 1200/1650 on my hynix with +94 mV I think and of course 50% power limit.

What I would consider a golden 290x is something that will do 1200/1600 with under 50mV and 50 power limit and 1350+/1700+ with about 120-150mV for 24/7 use in a loop. You could always do suicide runs to see what you're topping out at even if it's only stable enough for running a benchmark or two.

it's a 290, In general they seem to clock higher, i'm assuming due to the fact they don't have the extra shaders to power.

Reading this article about the black screens (I still haven't got one though) I started to "investigate" and control how my 12v rail voltages are, especially under load on the pcie rail (I'm using two separate cables, one 8pin and one 6pin) of my Cooler Master 850W Silent Pro M
And I found an "ugly" 11.63-11.50v (gpuz) in idle and low load and a "worse", down to 11.25v (gpuz) or 11.31v (hwinfo64) 12v real voltage after an Unigine Heaven 4.0 bench at 1180/1500 @ +156mv, +50PL headscratch.gif

http://www.xtremeshack.com/photos/20140410139712056164242.jpg

So I started to first of all control and change the position of the two pcie cables connectors plugged on my psu
But I got the very same results:

http://www.xtremeshack.com/photos/20140410139712060841855.jpg

In the end I even "tried" to power the 8pin with the 2x4pin molex to 8pin adapter, using two independent molex lines from my psu, the result was worse however, only 11.28v min on the 12v rail and lots of cable mess (at least I tried) thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

http://www.xtremeshack.com/photos/20140410139712062110427.jpg

My psu is about 4 years old, kept with the fan filter, I've even replaced the fan with a better one (a couple of years ago already, becoming dead silent) cool.gif
But should I get worried somehow, does this affect any of my 290's performance in mid oc or its stability?
Or I only have to start considering a nice psu replacement? wth.gif

Hey, I looked up your PSU on jonnyguru and if you go to the end of this review here: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story5&reid=166 it mentions voltage regulation as one of the negatives of that model ( I linked you to the 1000w one but I believe if it's the same model name but different wattages, mostly the same internals would be used and have similar traits). Those voltages do seem out of the normal range for the 12v rail though. With my EVGA it's about 11.88-12.06 depending on when I look at the reading. A 850w psu should be able to handle a single 290x just fine but because it is 4 years old that's already a really long time in upgrade time. Maybe it is time to consider getting a new one? My 2 cents

+Rep
Thanks for the answer, yeah I've red that review and other +12v low issue related and it seems that's a low voltage indeed
The 290 in oc is a power hungry video card and the min for the 12v rail is of 11.40v within the atx 2.3 specs (+/- 5%), mine's showing down to 11.30 so I guess I do have to think of getting a new one.
Hoping is gonna last for one more month and I'll may get the Corsair RM850 that I've found at a nice price

Cheers! wink.gif

I read that too

made me really angry because i had an xfx 650 watt psu and a single 290 and it Black screened, then I got another 290 and a new gold 850 XFX psu and it still managed to bs or act weird. so either this has nothing to do with it or i donno but I cant imagine it happenening on two quality seasonic units.

Do you have a multimeter? I'd check the voltage on the 12V rail with that, if you have one, before I got a new PSU. I don't think the GPU-Z readings are all that accurate.

Edit: Just checked mine. GPU-Z shows 11.88 at idle and 11.75 under load, while the multimeter showed 11.94 at idle and 11.90 at load. So the voltage drop GPU-Z is reading is either nonexistent, or it is occurring on the card, not on the input. That was checking at the PCIe power plug (I checked the 6 pin and the 8 pin and they were both the same).
