In my opinion it will not, it can overheat only, if i will play game with card tongue.gif

You can do it, but it has to be quick. You have maybe a 10 minute window to do it before the card will shut down due to thermal limits. There have been times where I shut down my pump and fans to test this and with just regular browsing (no games), my system shut down after 15~20 minutes of usage.

Make sure there is water inside the block (add plugs) so that the heat has more than just air to transfer to after heating up the metal.

Also, another good thing is that there are 2 BIOS, so if you fudge one up, you can always repair the broken one.

Wow that is quite the upgrade, congrats! The 290 should OC just the same since you have voltage control. Some 280x/7900 series GPUs had locked voltage due to OEMs using different VRMs that couldn't be controlled via software (mostly Asus GPUs).

That and it has 4GB of VRAM so I won't have to touch the card for a while, if anything get a second and go Crossfire. Only thing holding me back from the 780 as being a confirmed buy is the 3GB of VRAM or spending an extra $150 for eVga's 6GB 780.

If you look at the 290 (non-X), many are in the low $300s but use the reference cooler so you may have to spend extra for a beefier aftermarket cooler.

I have 4 x MSI 4GB R290X gaming and so far have got all of them to 1150-1165 core with .75mv bump. I am putting blocks on them next week if you want to follow along I will share results with you.

With your temperatures on that level of overclock with the 670, you should be more than fine.

I haven't had any driver issues with the 290X. There was one crash during BF4 (with Mantle enabled) but that was easily resolved with a quick Google (that told me to disable the iGPU). Temperatures aside, it's a very pleasant experience.

ASUS/Gigabyte/MSI cards off eBay are a very good buy right now.

Thanks for the advice, I'm leaning towards a Sapphire Tri-X 290 for $380 how's that sound?

I reccomebd using BradleyW's method for uninstalling drivers, he has two threads here on OCN for AMD and Nvidia and it's a simple, painless process. Drivers and stability should be a non-issue if you stick to 13.12 WHQL, the newer 14.X have a couple minor issues such as power limit not working correctly. Besides that, the only other issues I had with a 290 when I owned one are issues with Firefox's flash player and the AMD reference cooler, which was a tad bit too loud IMO.

Any reason why you went to a 780 though?

It's a great card but try to get a copy of the original invoice/receipt from the seller to be able to use for warranty purposes if you need it.

I don't think I'll be doing that, not till the warranty is blown out. I should have another year from my lightning warranty.

But heh, he said it was new but he wanted to test it anyway to make sure. The 280x replacement was also new and the fans were bad. Glad to hear good things about the G series 290 though. I'm not even sure if I will OC it yet, but the difference in hardware between the 7970 I had @ 1225/1700 should not be too far off what the 290 does on stock right? This was implied to me in another thread, so I hope for the best. Considering I only run a single 27" monitor doing 1080p for gaming, I can only imagine the 290 will push 120fps in games like BF4 on Ultra.

well the 280x is a rebrand of the 7970 so if you run the 290 at say 1060-1100 (an easy and mild OC ) you will see a nice bump. :)

Thats great to hear. I know the 280x is just rebranding but I am unsure of the real differences of performance. I'm sure I can leave it stock and see differences after some research. Just waiting now for the guy to either send me tracking or some kind of conformation from MSI. I am hoping they will get it out by tomorrow.

Currently looking at used Sapphire Tri-X 290's on eBay and loving the prices I'm seeing.

I have 670's in SLI and also 290's in Crossfire. All are great cards IMO. And the 290 obviously more powerful. I do really like my 290's and there's no way I'm selling them unless I absolutely had to for finances or something. I tend to keep most of my cards. I still have a 5770 laying around here. Still using it actually.
