Any reason why you went to a 780 though?

$380 for a Tri-X sounds like an awesome deal. And I went for the 780 because my family was complaining about the noise the reference cooler made.

The new 280x is not a rebrand, the old is
New 280x runs Tahiti XTL core gpu which is rated to pull ~250w, it changes the whole game in terms of performance per watt when comparing 280x and 7970 smile.gif

Problem is, not every single manufacturer is pushing the newer chips ( for obvious reasons )

There are a few articles online about it though, I think MSI and Gigabyte have been for a few months now

ok cool, last I read they were not out of 7970 (280x) stock. makes sense though some would not want to advertise that.

Any reason why you went to a 780 though?

I was sorely tempted by the 780ti since I've used NVIDIA for ages and know all the NVIDIAinspector driver flags, performance quirks, BIOS modding and power characteristics back to front.

However, the combination of 4GB (I like my texture mods in skyrim) and the Sapphire Tri X engineering was too good to pass up for the 290.

before buying the 290, check out this posting, unusually objective for an Overclockers.UK forum post but insightful.
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18575360

I can tell from personal experience with the Sapphire Tri X, 100% fan speed is really really loud but thankfully with no high pitched while, its more of a deeper sounding hairdryer, however, the cooling capacity is truly godly you probably won't need more than 50%. Judging from the performance of the cooler, core cooling is far superior to the reference AMD solution but the VRM cooling is a tad weaker. It won't be uncommon for your core to be in the low 70s but your VRMs to be 90 degrees+ when heavily overvolted.

I can definitely recommend the Tri X version, especially for $380, I got mine for $530 which I thought was a damn good price already.
Plus one of the best perks of all? HYNIX Memory!!!!!!!!, seriously, I got mine to 1500mhz with zero effort (since apparently it is rated for 6000mhz at stock)

HIS has FINALLY released their IceQ X2 card: http://www.techpowerup.com/199745/his-announces-higher-overclocked-r9-290x-iceq-x-turbo-graphics-card.html

I was hopeful they took this long to get the design back to normal but no sad-smiley-002.gif

What I would consider a golden 290x is something that will do 1200/1600 with under 50mV and 50 power limit and 1350+/1700+ with about 120-150mV for 24/7 use in a loop. You could always do suicide runs to see what you're topping out at even if it's only stable enough for running a benchmark or two.

Nice, it may use less. I don't know, I just know that it can do 1200 stable so far. I'll test it more with some gaming tonight. Hehe.

I'll try the vRAM out, any tips for Elpida?

I'll try to max it out over the easter break one day, along with my CPU once again. (Around 4.4GHz)

Yeah everyone was throwing a fit that they didn't get the new chips. They thought it was a secret to help sell off the old chips first.

Very dissapointed in HIS here, That card is 100% ugly, Gold cooler with Blue PCB and and backplate that looks like it shouldn't fit. HIS always had decent looking cards......what happened?

Elpida usually maxes around 1500Mhz (what it's rated for) but examples have hit 1625Mhz before.

I don't know what the max clock is on mine due to temps, but i can run 1250/1500 on both cards at +155mV/+175mV, hoping the extra will get me over 1300 when the temps start dropping here biggrin.gif

They originally gave me a 280x as a replacement but it was defective so they upgraded me for my troubles. The 280x seemed voltage locked so I hope the 290 will be easy to OC on.

I have 4 x MSI 4GB R290X gaming and so far have got all of them to 1150-1165 core with .75mv bump. I am putting blocks on them next week if you want to follow along I will share results with you.
I don't think I'll be doing that, not till the warranty is blown out. I should have another year from my lightning warranty.

But heh, he said it was new but he wanted to test it anyway to make sure. The 280x replacement was also new and the fans were bad. Glad to hear good things about the G series 290 though. I'm not even sure if I will OC it yet, but the difference in hardware between the 7970 I had @ 1225/1700 should not be too far off what the 290 does on stock right? This was implied to me in another thread, so I hope for the best. Considering I only run a single 27" monitor doing 1080p for gaming, I can only imagine the 290 will push 120fps in games like BF4 on Ultra.

why ? msi honors warranty after blocked as long as you dont cause damage to gpu
