Thanks for the fast response but since this is essentially a "broken"card I would like to first run some tests before investing big. The problem is I'm unable to mount any of my coolers tried (570ref, 5870ref and the Nvidia Accelero 3 fan thingy)
For now I just need the cheapest cooler I can find then later I can go with something good I would prefer air since I don't have my pc in a case atm and have nowhere to mount the rad except a cardboard box biggrin.gif

Under water i set 1060/1350 with no problems. thumb.gif

punched my 290X to 1200/1750 before it overheated due to ref cooler not being enough, its currently pending the accelero IV or a waterblock in the future.

Other option which is what I have for now is putting the 290 is a mini-itx gaming pc...with a 4670K...its a nice little rig but is rarely every used...actually only used when my main rig is mining.

From what Ive been reading 3 x 290s is a sweet spot in terms of driver issues, esp for quad + eyefinity...

Thoughts anyone? Thanks!

i can attest to this i have 3 R9 290's in trifire clock @ 1100mhz/1330mem an can tell i don't have no issues at all playing all my games smoothness all over...playing BF4 with mantle enable pure joy i tell ya.. thats using 14.3 beta drivers...all my cards are under water also they don't throttle under load thumb.gif

Maarten, This VGA COOLER Gelid ICY VISION Rev 2 might be what you are looking for atm. It fits and has worked out great for a few forum members.

Another option is the Arctic Accelero S1R2 with 2 good 120mm fans strapped on it.

Good luck!

Edit: The Gelid Icy Vision Rev 2 was hard to find on nl.hardware.info, but since that cooler works, I'd Imagine the Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo II would do so too. It's a pain to mount, but well worth it

You wouldn't happen to have an AIO water cooler lying around would you?  With a little patience and some zip ties you can probably strap one of those on for testing purposes.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1203528/official-nvidia-gpu-mod-club-aka-the-mod

There are fancier ways to get this done now, but if you have an AIO and some zip ties it could work temporarily.

Out of curiosity, whats your ASIC quality (via GPUz)? I've heard theres a huge variance in chip quality on the 290s, not so much the 290x. That particular screen looks like it might be caused by your VRAM, are you on Hynix or Elpida?

As for reference.
Mine is 78.9% asic quality
I can get 1150 fully stable on +100mv, 1200 on +187mv. (not just benchmark stable, verified with 200 Crysis runs ).
My memory is Hynix so I just run at its rated speed of 1500mhz. I've heard the worst of the Elpida chips cant go beyond 1300mhz.

That being said, I only use 1100mhz +38mv 1500mhz VRAM for daily use since it is the best balance of heat, noise and performance.

Running quad here, i water blocked all mine and have a 1600watt psu to go with them. I can't really overclock very much because i get worried about my PSU and breaker lol. I can only suggest if your looking for absolute max fps go 4 gpus. It's really hard to recommend it over 3 because 3 do well. I am currently doing scaling tests but in 4k eyefinity in another thread 11520x2160 right now. If you would like i can do some scaling tests at 5760 from 3 to 4gpus. I don't have alot of the brand new game releases though. And yes some games really have problems with 4 way CF over 3 wayCF. One comes to my mind is SKYRIM.

If your going to have to spend a chunk of money to get that 4th card in, your benefits per dollar will go down frown.gif
