Back on my 850W PSU "low" +12v rail software shown by the gpuz and hwinfo64 (290's vrm section) so I decided to test this morning with an analog multimeter (I only have this one)
The multimeter is "somehow" indicating me a bit more than the real voltage, tested on different dc adaptors and ps and it shows me something like 0.75-1v more than what it should do.

So I checked on an empty 12v pcie cable on my idle pc and showed me ~12.8v, same on a 4pin molex.
Therefore I loaded the 1180/1500 @+156 mv and 50 pl, maxed all the case fans and ran another Heaven 4.0 bench, recording this at the end (just like before happened):

However, during the benchmark, my analog multimeter "went down" only indicating me ~12.5v (from the idle 12.8v)
I know the mm was always showing me a bit more than the real voltage but I'm not really seeing such a great +12v decrease under heavy load, what do ya guys think? confused.gif

Do I still have to try with a good, digital mm (at least once), should I stay safe or really consider a PSU replacement?
The both gpuz and hwinfo +12v min with the default 290 clocks remain however a bit higher thinking.gif

you really need 156 offset? can you lower a bit. try 100. your 12V rdgs are a bit lower. around .13 - .15 v lower but does not seem to affect card performance 'cause your H4 score is normal.

thats pretty much margin of error, for me i can't hit the same clocks that i can under 13.12, struggling to bench 1250/1500 when on 13.12 i could go as high as 1280 on the core.

As I slight update to whether the broken R9 290 could be fixed or not. Today I mounted a cooler and installed the gpu. The setup sparked luckily for me I always test in a garbage AM3 board I have. Either way the Pci-e slot survived and I localized the spark it is next to one of the mounting holes.

To be more exact the previous owner has removed a amount of pcb substrate to mount a cooler this normally is not that much of a problem hell I myself used the dremel on cards in various ocassions but in this case it is. The reason it is a problem here is because there is a voltage regulator that has it's traces very close to it. With that we have a short circuit since the mounting holes on graphics cards are connected to the ground.

My best solution I can think of right now is sealing of the open traces as good as I can with epoxy but I'm open to suggestions of those that are familiar with extreme modding.

It gives me the artifacts at any lower than 156 (for that clocks), tried again with 125, 137 and 145, the last one would start the artifacts in the middle of the benchmark
Could be the "low" +12v and therefore a serious vdrop?
The card is having an 81.5% asic and Hynix memory

The 13.12 always gave me a similar score of 1529-1530 at that oc (1180/1500/156) and some black stripe artifacts, now is a bit better and absolutely no artifacts wink.gif
And btw, I won't oc that far on a reference cooling, neither with an excellent case airflow tongue.gif

not sure if ASIC matters. 79% here and only needs less than 50 offset for same oc. prolly lower. i never really bother finding the "right" amount for runs like these. i know i need +200 for 1300 and 0 for 1175. i prolly added 30 offset for the 1180 run.

if you don't feel safe with the psu, then replace it.

Anyone want to tell me if there is anything wrong with the PowerColor PCS+ R9 290 and 290X? I'm finding crazy deals on them for great prices. Are they not good cards?

Not a thing. Seems prices on AMD cards are taking a dive for whatever reason. Probably no one is buying them at the prices they were.

Nothing wrong with them at all, they are quite good cards.

problem is the name, when people see Powercolor they think "It's a piece of crap"

Not everyone mind you, most people in this thread will tell you they are quite good.

some cards are not performing the way they should. like a 290X performing like a 290 Pro. also, check the warranty. afaik, powercolor warranty is not transferable. if it is still, i would not buy a used one.

edit: i know one case that was solved with a bios update.
