[Official] AMD R9 290X / 290 Owners Club - Page 2072

Okay, so there has to be something I am doing wrong. So my frames in Battlefield 4 are not what they should be. As you may have seen my older posts, I just upgrade from my 560 Ti. I could play Battlefield 4 on Low settings at around 70 ~ 80 FPS. So now I put in my R9 290 and have the 14.3 drivers installed (I have tried 14.4). On all low settings with dx11, I get 70 ~ 80 FPS, on ultra I get 50 ~ 64 FPS. On Mantle, I get slightly less FPS. This is kind of how my previous 7950 handled. My 560 Ti outperformed an overclocked 7950 in most games. These were all on full 64v64 player servers. What the hell is going on? I refuse to believe my CPU is holding me back. It is a i5 2500k @ 4ghz. I know it is not the best OC but I am just afraid to push it further on this Motherboard because of what happened last time. Also, this card seems to run pretty damn hot. When I was running the Heaven Bench on Extreme everything 1600 x 900 the temps were 78c on the core, 77c vm1 and 68c vm2. The fan was at 85%. The card has not yet been overclocked and it at it's default 977/1250. This is the MSI r9 290 GAMING edition.

it's your CPU. Even my 4770k at 3.8Ghz stock is holding back my R9 290 and once i go crossfire mode enabled I see even bigger CPU bottleneck. This is on DX11 mode not mantle.

Hopefully 14.4 WHQL mantle will help fix bottleneck with CPU. Best way to get rid of bottleneck is by using downsampling by changing extra resolution higher than the 100% bar so you max out graphic use.

Btw that ram of yours has really high timings for 1600 speed are you sure you set that correct?
1600 almost all ram modules can do at least 9-9-9 timings

I just fixed the ram issue. Apparently I needed to have it set to 1600 and not auto. It is back down to 9-9-9-24. But anyways about the CPU. So basically saying is that it doesn't matter what GPU I have I will never be able to get over 80 fps in Multiplayer because of my CPU?

That seems ridiculous, overclocked i5 2500k are still quite fast aren't they?

@igrease how is your cpu load while playing? You might want to try some other games and see if you have improvements. The 7950 should have been much better than the 560ti even. Hmm, although it kind of does look like a cpu bottleneck if you used both gpu's and put the game on Low settings, that will force the most load upon the cpu, might explain why your fps numbers are similar even with the gpu change. You could try higher visual settings, maybe you will gain FPS (sounds crazy tongue.gif).

When I play Battlefield 4 my CPU is only at 66%. GPU usage is at 99%.

Check the first page ive done this and it works

Make a txt document with notepad then write

CD C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner
MSIAfterburner.exe /wi4,30,8d,10

If you have crossfire you can use this command line to change voltages per gpu

MSIAfterburner.exe /sg0 /wi6,30,8d,10 /sg1 /wi6,30,8d,10

and then save as .bat file. Everytime you start this bat file then start msi it will start with +100mv

For 50mv: 8
For 100mv:10
For 125mv:14
For 150mv:18
For 175mv:1C
For 200mv:20
Think thats all right im not home yet.

Multiplayer and not using mantle - you definitely need to oc your cpu. i recommend at least 4.5GHz.

Does anyone know if an EK full cover water block will fit on an MSI R9 290 Gaming? If not, what water block(s) can I use?

Derrick has said that EK will be releasing a waterblock specifically for the MSI R9 290 Gaming and hopefully that it'll be available for sale on the EK webshop by Wednesday. ETA on when Frozencpu or PPCs is still kinda sketchy.

The stock 290 block wont fit on the MSI Gaming due to the larger capacitors used
