4K @ 60FPS == 2GB/s, PCIe2.0 x4 == 2GB/s, so you can see where it becomes a problem if one card has only 2.0x4, said card would be capped at ~60 frames, which for quadfire would be a total of ~240FPS. (assuming the primary had 2.0 x16)

thanks for the reply. Im not sure if the bandwidth calculation can be done as so.
If you see the below link, even (4) gtx 680s show a signifcant pcie bandwidth bottleneck between x8 and x16 pcie 2.0. Doesnt this mean a similar situation may arise ?http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2238947

also another user. seems to be affecting surround setups, which is less than a single 4k

nvidia hardware is excluded and uses a different system entirely, they use a mixed system where displays are intended to be attached to multiple cards and not just the primary, which means buffers are copied between each card individually for every frame rendered, also including larger amounts of control data, so for said setups they require an even distribution of PCIe lanes to each and every card.

to add to that, hardware physx will make it even worse, there's a reason why nvidia discontinued support for quad-SLI.

I know BF4 is a little more demanding than BF3, but you shouldn't be getting that low of a performance using a 290 with a 1080 120Hz monitor.

So far there are two maps where I actually get 120fps on Low. Golmud Railway and Rogue Transmission. Every other map is around 60 ~ 80. Though in Blade and Soul I practically doubled my fps. League of Legends still likes to hover between 70 fps and 110. Not sure why. Would overclocking my CPU to 4.5Ghz really make such a dramatic difference?

It couldn't hurt to, but in most tests I've seen, OCing the CPU only helps increase minimum FPS, not so much the overall FPS, unless your CPU was really bottlenecking.

I'm getting a constant 120FPS for League of Legends, otherwise it swings around 200~300 if I'm not using Vsync. Also, I recommend using full screen over windowed or windowed/borderless, as that has brought down FPS for me in the past. I find it strange that you only get 70~110, when my resolution is much larger than yours and my GPU is also a lot weaker.

I could play Battlefield 4 on Low settings at around 70 ~ 80 FPS. So now I put in my R9 290 and have the 14.3 drivers installed (I have tried 14.4). On all low settings with dx11, I get 70 ~ 80 FPS, on ultra I get 50 ~ 64 FPS. On Mantle, I get slightly less FPS. This is kind of how my previous 7950 handled. My 560 Ti outperformed an overclocked 7950 in most games. These were all on full 64v64 player servers. What the hell is going on? I refuse to believe my CPU is holding me back. It is a i5 2500k @ 4ghz. I know it is not the best OC but I am just afraid to push it further on this Motherboard because of what happened last time. Also, this card seems to run pretty damn hot. When I was running the Heaven Bench on Extreme everything 1600 x 900 the temps were 78c on the core, 77c vm1 and 68c vm2. The fan was at 85%. The card has not yet been overclocked and it at it's default 977/1250. This is the MSI r9 290 GAMING edition.

^ What he said, and with a 2500k 4.5GHz should be a cake walk.

RAM speed plays a very important role in BF4, if you are only running 1600 you can benefit greatly from higher RAM clocks.  2133 is about the sweet spot for price/performance ratio.

Edit: I see that Talon720 said something about reference water blocks actually do fit the MSI cards, so I will 'stay tuned' for more information.

Also I picked up a 3rd card sapphire 290x reference for $400. Despite trying to talk myself out of it which didnt work. I lost out on a $375.00 hynix I'm still bummed about that. I don't know what kind of memory this has though. Supposedly, it's never been used, so that's something! thumb.gif
