I could play Battlefield 4 on Low settings at around 70 ~ 80 FPS. So now I put in my R9 290 and have the 14.3 drivers installed (I have tried 14.4). On all low settings with dx11, I get 70 ~ 80 FPS, on ultra I get 50 ~ 64 FPS. On Mantle, I get slightly less FPS. This is kind of how my previous 7950 handled. My 560 Ti outperformed an overclocked 7950 in most games. These were all on full 64v64 player servers. What the hell is going on? I refuse to believe my CPU is holding me back. It is a i5 2500k @ 4ghz. I know it is not the best OC but I am just afraid to push it further on this Motherboard because of what happened last time. Also, this card seems to run pretty damn hot. When I was running the Heaven Bench on Extreme everything 1600 x 900 the temps were 78c on the core, 77c vm1 and 68c vm2. The fan was at 85%. The card has not yet been overclocked and it at it's default 977/1250. This is the MSI r9 290 GAMING edition.

Actually, do you know if your card is actually running at 977mhz when playing the various maps on Low Settings?
The reason I ask is the powerplay algorithm on the 290 tends to downclock the core at a certain performance level (especially with VSYNC)......basically what I mean is that the card would rather downclock to 667mhz or something to provide 60 ish FPS than staying at 977mhz and providing 80+.
You can test this out by using RadeonPro to create a custom profile for BF4 whereby you force the GPU to use max clocks when the game is running.

I also second the potential CPU bottleneck, that being said, I would hold off on this judgement until you verify that the GPU is actually running at full power.

Silly question but any harm in mixing two makes of cards? ie Sapphire and Asus 290X reference?

I'm wondering the same thing too. I doubt though.
I doubt it's CPU bottleneck with one 290. Screen resolution when playing BF4? (Never mind I saw you have 1080p@120Hz.) Download Open Hardware Monitor, run it in the background while playing BF4. Then go to View >> Show Plot. Select CPU cores (Load). There you can see whether CPU is bottleneck or not.

Did you use DDU to completely uninstall previous drivers?

I did use DDU to completely remove my Nvidia drivers and the previous 14.4 drivers I had. I am currently using 14.3. Not sure if I did anything wrong but nothing is appearing the PLOT window.

Here is what is going on while in Battlefield 4. The only way to make my GPU usage 99% is when I ramp the Resolution Scale all the way up to 200%. Obviously that tanks my FPS hard. On standard Ultra settings with Antialiasing Post OFF, It hovers around 67%. On all low settings is hovers around 55%. Yet it still says 977 on the core. And if you don't know already, Mantle actually decreases my performance and I get lots of stuttering and hiccups. Should I try one of the 13.xxx Stable Drivers?

look at your cpu usage across all cores? the max value when the system is at load.

You didn't select/tick the "CPU Core #X" under "Load" section. You can see in the main window, there is a little box next to the sensor name.

Okay well when playing BF4 on OWM the cores hover around 70% ~ 80%. Just switched to the latest 13.x Drivers. Nothing has changed. When I play on Low it hovers around 55% GPU usage, when I crank the resolution scale up it goes up to around 94% but then the fps drop again.

Nope but it will go by the lowest clocked card. As far as the clock settings.

That basically what you should get. When playing at 200% resolution scale with 1080p monitor, GPU actually rendering the game at 2160p (4k) resolution. This of course will affect FPS but also lower CPU load. Basically a good solution if you're experiencing CPU bottleneck with 1080p monitor. Did you use the same resolution scale when using NVIDIA GPU?
