I bought a NEW Gigabyte Windforce 290x and it died the first day. Windows would not even boot.

I then sent the card back for refund and ended up buying a USED Gigabyte r9 290x Windforce from eBay.

My logic is that I'd be better off with one that has been tested thoroughly and the used one worked fine for several weeks and I was using it for mining.

I never overclocked it and it always ran open-air and never really got much over 80c.

Anyway, one of my miners started crashing so I ran 3Dmark and noticed artifacts and video glitches everywhere.

Heaven benchmark does the exact same thing.

I rebuilt the system with a fresh windows 8.1, & Catalyst 13.12 and the video board is still misbehaving like its overclocked when its not.

I saved the BIOS when i first got the card and although I never did change the BIOS out, I went ahead and flashed it back. No effect.

I'm not sure what else to do...RMA? Has this board failed too? Any ideas? I'm so discouraged. These boards don't seem to be reliable at all and I'm not mistreating them.

thanks!

Mining sort of is mistreating the card...running 100% load for hours and/or days non-stop. That is unrealistic load for the card. Weeks of mining can be equal to years of gaming.

What did the previous owner use it for? It could have been abused by the first person and you just finished it off.

perhaps he hooked a monitor to it? it was only a few weeks old as he gave me the receipt.

Unless he loaded another BIOS on it, the card never went over 84c. Gigabyte throttles 10c cooler than the reference BIOS.

I would think the components should be rated for x number of hours of operation and it should not matter if those hours are consecutive or not...

I'll be glad to add you, however I need a GPU-Z validation link with your OCN name showing like U27 did above as example or see OP for other valid proof. smile.gif Thanks.

might be a reason behind that...

your best bet is either RMA or see if you can underclock till its stable again.

Okay so the past few days Ive been wondering how will my 1090T behave with the R9 290, I haven't seen any1 talking about and I'm in doubt if my ~4.175Mhz 1090T will be able to feed it to a point in which it won't be a massive bottleneck. Google gave me only a few people asking the same question but no relevant data.
The resolution will be 1080p, and when it gets here I will do some testing on OC speeds on my Phenom. Maybe some graphs going from Stock speed up to 4.2Ghz + Memory speeds from 1333Mhz CL7 1600Mhz CL9 and 2000Mhz CL11 + Northbridge OC. I'll also disable two cores to simulate a Phenom II Quad for my testings.
I also got the availability to buy a year old 3770k+MSI z77 Mpower for 250 euros, wondering if I should or not.

Anyway, I hope my findings don't dissapoint me and my Phenom shows itself still capable of playing in the big league, if it isn't I'll make a thread on either the AMD GPU section or the AMD CPU section with this info.

Anything I should take into consideration?
What benchmarks should I use for the test I plan on doing? And what software should I use to monitor my CPU usage + GPU usage?
I'll need a log of everything to have the thread built up nicely so any help I can get is welcome.

Hello guys, today i checked my GPU oc potencial before deciding to buy waterblock and i noticed strange thing, then i set my card to 1200/1500, through heaven benchmark my core fluctuates 800-1200. However if i set to stock clock it looks more stable, 850-947. Is it possible that my OCZ 750W ZT PSU cant handle 2500k ( 4.2ghz) + single r9 290 (oced)? Or its related to 14.3 beta drivers? However i tried to run thief benchmark, and core stayed at 1200 all the time except for 0.5-1s dropped to 1050.

P.S. Arizonian - update me to aftermarket. I done it 2 weeks after buying my stock gpu, but had no time to put my photos somewhere. Here is the photos with hooked gelid icy vision, but it was not silent enough for me, so i decided to change fans to Be Quiet Shadow Wings 92mm (2nd pic):

yea, your 1090T should be perfectly fine for the most part, only concern may be a couple games like BF4 that will push it to the absolute max, but even then, you'll likely still get better results than a 4-core i5 or i7.

benchmarks wise, you can use a lot of things, though you'll likely get a little less points then intel equivalents due to older tech in use etc, but definitely don't confuse this for game experience.

there's always a little throttle on these cards, the 14.x betas might be particularly nasty in that regard, heard trixx somewhat disables the clock variance though.

Do you guys know if (or why not) the 290 Tri-X would unlock to the 290X? confused.gif

You would have to check the 290 -> 290X thread and use their info tool to determine if there is a chance it can unlock. Nowadays its a bit rare for a brand new card to unlock since the majority of the ones that did unlock were when they were high in demand and to make ends meet they would use the same boards and just flash the bios. Now that they've been catching up they either laser lock them or just use the 290 boards. The higher chances to unlocking are from people who buy old mining gear as it was during that time the cards were high in demand and they never bothered to check them (some do).
