Ya I should have been more clear there. The regular 4gb versions are not affected.

The block/backplate combination with the best VRM1 temperature out of the box is Aquacomputer.  They have a passive and active backplate.  The passive does nearly as good of a job as the active, but is rather ugly/incomplete looking compared to the nice nickel plated cover w/ heatpipe.

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v80), quality = 95

I am using the XSPC block and it works well.  It worked even better once I upgraded thermal pads for the VRMs.

See my thread here:  http://www.overclock.net/t/1468593/r9-290-x-thermal-pad-upgrade-vrm-temperatures

My temperature drops were quite drastic, and I still haven't added thermal pads to my backplate.  I'm sure they will come down further once I get around to that...just not feeling like draining my loop to do it.

Other users with EK blocks have reported similar temperature drops to what I experienced.  I am unsure of Koolance performance as I haven't seen many people with those blocks;  most popular seem to be EK, XSPC, and AquaComputer.

Is it easy to mount a backplate without also going WC aswell? (reference card) am pondering getting http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/p/Watercool-HEATKILLER-reg;-GPU-backplate-R9-290X_44412.html to help cool my card a little aswell as make it more pleasing to the eye Watercooling UK wasnt really helpful as to if i can use it without a block too its a passive backplate its just the screws that worry me

Considering an RMA, these coolers are defective.

Mine does that too, I lifted the end of the card up to my case with a shoelace biggrin.gif

You're not going to RMA your cards for something that easy solvable I hope? rolleyes.gif

I personally don't have any experience with it, but a friend of mine attached EK backplates to 7970s while cooling them with AIO water coolers. You may have to get a little crafty with it, but it's possible; a trip to the hardware store may be necessary.

I cant believe how strong these cards are, I only have 290's. I managed to crack 34 Mega Pixels in game, While its too far for realistic gaming just yet
these video cards can keep up even. BF4 @ 34MP and can still hold a playable FPS. Not for hard core gamers obviously but its a peak into the future :-)
