The sound isn't coil whine but a very irritable buzzing.

Yep coil whine isn't actually a constant whine but a high pitched, piercing buzzing sound. I haven't noticed it yet on my VaporX 290 so I think you might have to RMA yours. I've been running kombustor pretty heavily.

What frame rates are you getting coil whine?
Actually just for you I'll try load some menu screens. My 7970 used to get coil whine when getting above 1000 fps, then it developed to just being over 70% load lol.

EDIT: Nope, no coil whine over 400 fps. I don't want to actually push it to the point where it develops coil whine like my old 7970, so I'm good with this.

This was my biggest fear BTW. That I'd drop $600 on a 290X, put it underwater, and have to suffer through horrific amounts of coil whine.

Luckily my Diamond 290X is a pretty great overclocker, runs extremely smoothly, and is quiet as a mouse in my loop.

I'd RMA that thing ASAP.

Just thought I would drop in and say that Newegg has ASUS and PowerColor OpenBox 290x's for $435 and $415 respectively. Pretty good deal if you ask me. Probably black screeners that have been redone

I read somewhere that it buzzing noise could have come from power supply choke but the thing is I have Seasonic SS760 Watts Platinum, one of the best power supply on the market as of now so I don't think that is the cause of it, however, I'm still not sure because the power requirement for the R9 290 is relatively high at 750Watts.

Can you tell me what you guys think the cause is? I will be getting my replacement next week and hopefully it was just a bad card and not my PSU not having enough juice.

It is OK to ram it. However there is no way the manufacture could anticipate it. Many factors affect it. Incoming power (wall voltage) psu, Mobo. Ect. You can take the same card and put it into anther rig with no coil whine. It is just physics and luck

On OCN there is a fix for coil whine in 7970. The idea is simple and works for every card: "Let the card whine continuously until that noise stops on its own"

Not a 100% fix though

Not everyone can heart it. Others can. And as I said it does have allot of variables that can affect it

Ok, so I ran Tomb Raider benchmark on lowest setting and got around 450 FPS average. There is definitely a buzzing when I click on the game or when doing the benchmark. I will try to make a video of it for you guys to see.

EDIT: Here's the link to the video I just made. http://goo.gl/JGtXhp

People hate the Asus 290 because it doesn't have any heat sink for the VRM and it felt cheap and lazy quality by Asus.
