Sucks though, certainly when planning on a waterblock.

I do believe overclocking that 2600K will be necessary, at least for multiplayer intensive games like BF3/BF4. But on the bright side, overclocking a 2600K is about as easy as it gets.

I won't be grabbing BF4 until after I have my new rig up and running. This was just to test the cards to make sure they worked and weren't complete dogs.

New rig will be using a Corsair AX860 so in the coming weeks once everything is put together I'll be able to see if 860W is enough for two 290Xs overclocked under water. I know I'll be cutting it close but I've gotta try it. I read somewhere here that a reviewer got a 780W load with two 290Xs, so factoring in overclocks it is likely going to exceed 860W but the AX860 apparently has a bit of a buffer and should be able to handle more than its rating so we will just have to wait and see.

Thanks for the replies guys, certainly helped make the decision. I've just bookmarked the over clock process for my CPU and will do it when I get home.
Just seen this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-vtx3d-radeon-r9-290x-x-edition-28nm-5000mhz-gddr5-gpu-1030mhz-2816-streams-dport-dvi-hdmi-plus-b?utm_source=google+shopping&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=CJi2it3OxboCFaZf2wodcUYAYQ
Seems very cheap, anyone have an experience with VTX3D products?

If I push the fans to 1000-1200RPM I think I could keep it well below 48ºC.

I reached 1271/1500 under water, max temp as 49 degrees with a few of sp120 quiet editions. This card was made for watercooling lol

I can run BF4 smoothly at ultra at 1080p, however at high settings 5760x1080 it is quite choppy. this is despite the fact that ingame fps meter says 40FPS. I am thinking whether upgrading to a single 290x will give me a noticable bump in smoothness.

must be due to the vram and bandwidth limit. a single 290x should be smoother.

Not even close to that. you're exaggerating mate. More like 5-7% clock-for-clock. And max OC vs max OC they will perform much closer than that. i7 3770K supports PCI-E 3.0 though. But still for single cards you will hardly see a difference between 2.0 & 3.0

Yup, maybe I was. Bottom line, if you have a second gen i7, you're pretty much set for more than 2 years . Unless broadwell will give tremendous ipc boost, which I douubt, sandies are good to go, except if new pcie devices would saturate current pcie lanes, which a move to ivy may solve.

And I doubt broadwell would oc much on 14nm, plus if they do go bga, well... I don't know.

All these are speculations.
