Are talking about a 290 vapor X or a 290x vapor X?

OCUK have both listed at £275 and £330 respectively, so either way £200 for a used one isn't all that bad when coming from a friend and you're sure its in good condition / looked after.

I think you'll struggle to sell a used 290 for £270+, even with an ek waterblock though, especially on eBay or the likes to a complete stranger, because it's possible to buy a brand new 290x and ek block for £310 from OCUK (Asus direct cu 290x £239 + ek full cover £80).

That does depend on which 290 it is of course, but I know that I personally wouldn't take a used 290 and block over a new 290x and block for a minor £40 saving, but that's just my opinion.

ok, this is driving me crazy. Hardware acceleration for videos. It makes my GPU run @1GHz. If I tun off HA my CPU is used, which I don't like. I know AMD cards had many problems with playing videos before, drivers crashing etc.... but did they have to do this? Can I tell my GPU to go to 500MHz max (for example)? Can I customize it at all?

You should be able to use afterburner to create a custom 2d profile.

I still don't understand why this is all a problem though?

If you want HW acceleration, you are going to have to accept GPU usage, if you don't want that, you are going to have to accept CPU usage.....
If the card clocks to 1,000mhz and gets 10-20% load, or clocks to 500MHz and gets 40% load, what is the difference? The power circuitry will adapt the voltage in such a way that the power usage is equal.....

I want lower voltage and clock. I'm pretty sure this card doesn't need this much juice to play videos lol

I understand, but what I'm getting at, is that the power usage will all work itself out to be about the same.
I don't use any HW acceleration for streaming at all, and my CPU still stays at 1400MHz with only 2-3% usage most of the time.
I do watch some of my 720p movies with HW acceleration for better upscaling sometimes though..... still not much load....

other systems like mine . . . the gpus stay at stock 300 core and 150 vram when watching videos. not sure why even if HA is enabled. Both my AMD and Intel rigs. I am talking about YT videos. i don't use the pc to watch movies other than those.

hmm, I unlocked voltage control in MSI AB, and now clk/vol goes to max for 5-10 seconds after a video is started, then goes back to 300MHz/low voltage... might be alright now thumb.gif

I haven't even looked at my clocks with HA enabled to be honest.... at least not on my 290's anyways.
I did notice on my 280x that I had a 300MHz, 500MHz 2D, and then max clock 3D state.
When streaming the clock was 300MHz, when watching full HD movies, it was still 300MHz, and while playing Angry Birds it was 500MHz... lol

I am in agreeance his clocks should not be 1,000MHz, but I wonder now did he just peak at GPU-Z or something to see them at that speed while he was watching, because I have noticed launching GPU-Z will initiall clock the card up.... Not really much information to go off of....
